Colored deputies fire on mob in renewal of Cairo jail attack
Springfield Ill Feb 18 Adjutant General Dickson ordered Company M Champaign to Cairo after Sheriff Nellis reported trouble. In Cairo Alexander Halliday leader of the mob was killed by deputy sheriffs while four others were wounded. Halliday lay dying three hours in near zero weather as deputies refused entry to a physician. Eight deputies, eight of twelve, were black. the volley followed crowd fire and a guard released shots into the mob. The incident stemmed from petty crimes by Negroes including a purse snatching. Governor Deneen advised caution. militia guarded the jail. Halliday’s death under investigation. Pratt indicted for highway robbery.
