St. Petersburg is shaken after the murder of Duke Sergius amid fears of renewed oppression and terror. Officials warn residents to stay behind palace walls while revolutionary factions celebrate and world leaders send condolences. An extraordinary imperial council meeting is called to address the crisis.
Bells of Moscow's 500 churches toll for Grand Duke Sergius son killed in intrigue. Requiem masses are held as his remains rest at Choudoff monastery. Duchess Elizabeth prostrated, crowds mourn, troops guard the Kremlin, shops closed amid mourning borders.
Five people perished in a dwelling house fire on a plantation about 54 miles north of here. The blaze occurred today at Island Falls Maine. Authorities reported the totals and began investigations into the cause.
Chicago February 18. Mrs. Margaret B Davidson 64 and John Day 78 were found in a room filled with illuminating gas. The woman was dead and the man unconscious. Whether they intended death by own action or were accidentally overcome is not known.
A February storm blocks through trains on Eastern railroads. In Jamestown the Chicago Express, stalled near Eden Center, proved impossible to move by four locomotives. Passengers are being cared for as authorities debate political violence and its effects. Railway telegraph operators and other railroad workers in Moscow also strike for higher wages and shorter hours, suspending train service.
Prince Friedrich Leopold returns to Berlin deciding to travel by water to Manchuria, amid rumors of peace negotiations by Emperor William. Grand Duke Sergus’s requiem at St. Isaac's drew foreign dignitaries but no imperial family members attended as police kept back crowds outside. In the vast cathedral square, carriages and sleighs lined the entrance while Cossacks and mounted sentries patrolled the perimeter.
In Piusville on February 13 six workers were killed and 14 injured, four seriously, when a mine car jumped a track while lowering into the pit. The collision caused a rock fall, crushing six men near the top rock.
In Cleveland on February 18 attorney Nathan Loeser serving as receiver in the Chadwick bankruptcy case was elected trustee by creditors. Mrs Chadwick wept upon the announcement and needed comfort from her lawyers, opposing Loeser’s selection as trustee following a review of claims and closing the case.
Independent operators in Indiana urge state action against Standard Oil asserting unfair practices. They request legislative or regulatory remedies to curb monopolistic conduct and promote competitive pricing in the oil industry.
Indiana independents press state aid against Standard Oil in Muncie arguing pipe line rates freeze out rivals. In Topeka, Kansas the House passes a bill making oil pipelines common carriers, signaling a new antitrust push allied to a pending Senate bill and awaiting Gov Hoch's signature.

Dr William R Harper president of the University of Chicago says he has cancer and may not survive the operation next Wednesday. Rockefeller is expected to arrive in Chicago soon and Prof Robert F Harper will reach New York from Europe. Physicians report three examinations confirm cancer and Dr McBurney was brought in as a leading specialist to perform the operation.
Fort St Paul Minn Feb 18 Frank Howe serving a two year sentence at Fort Snelling escaped. Private Kearns on sentry duty is also gone and thought to have deserted with Howe. Howe allegedly drew boiler water and built a fire to blow up boilers and wreck buildings. He also turned lamps in the post building to light decorations for a hoped fire. Both acts were discovered before damage occurred.
Washington February 18 Chinese minister Sir Chetuns Liang Cheng presented to President Roosevelt an oil painting of the dowager empress of China as a token of goodwill and in appreciation of the United States role in preserving China's territorial integrity. A formal exchange of addresses followed and the painting will hang in a prominent spot at the National Museum.
Louis Missouri February 18 five thousand candidates will be initiated into the mysteries of the Knights of Pythias at one time in this city next Monday night. The Jai Alai building near the world’s fair grounds is being converted into an immense lodge room for the occasion. Pythians from across Missouri and other states will attend the largest initiation in the history of secret societies.
A district official named Gnoutoff was assassinated at Tedyr by Armenians with political motive. At Vagarsgaspad the mayor was shot and killed, signaling rising violence across the region as authorities investigate.
Chicago February 18 notice that a vacancy in the Second senatorial district, once held by Frank D Comerford, who was expelled, was sent to Governor Deneen by County Clerk Olson. The law requires a special election, and while the governor has not acted, it is expected to coincide with the regular city election.
Helena Montana February 18 the lower branch of the legislature passed a bill restricting reckless ill advised marriage. Except in the case of an innocent party to a divorce suit brought on the ground of adultery divorced persons are forbidden to marry again.
Bradstreet's reports severe winter weather disrupts rail and trade, worst in the northwest and west, with some resilience in iron and steel sales. Cotton goods demand rises for export, coarse fabrics scarce. woolen apparel active. foreign raw wools easier. Weekly wheat exports reach 537,100 bushels, corn exports around 2,?32,000 bushels, with year-to-date figures showing declines versus last year.
Peoria reports the deaths of Mrs Gertrude Harris and Mannius Harris from an Edwards Station fire that incinerated three children. Only Earl Harris, 6, survives in critical condition as authorities await his fate. Also reported Roy Green, 18, hanged in Owensboro for the murder of Janes Coomes, claiming whisky caused the crime.
