Insurgent Fire On American Forces As Manila Battles Continue

Reports from Manila on February 12–13 say insurgents opened long range fire on American troops with minimal effect while Gen Otis in Washington said conditions were quiet and business resumed. Agoncillo implicated. Aguinaldo allegedly advised a drive out before reinforcements. Casualties included several U S soldiers and two California regiment members.

Big Steamer in Trouble Off Swampscott in Thick Weather

A large ocean liner was sighted off dredge ledge in Swampscott bay during a storm. It appeared anchored and repeatedly blew distress or warning whistles, but shore observers could not confirm the signal. The vessel was heavily iced and coast guard access was blocked by ice.

Five of six skaters rescued from Lake Michigan ice break

Five of the six skaters stranded when ice broke away on Lake Michigan were rescued this morning. Rescued are Attorney Elmer D. Roberts, his niece and nephew, Oreland Chauncey Manney, George Malloy and J. W. Carons of Lake Forest, and Arthur Fletcher of Ravenswood. All are accounted for.

Kipling relative aims for 50000 in Malicious Prosecution suit

Brattleboro Vermont February 12 Beattie Balestier brother of Mrs Rudyard Kipling leaves for New York to sue Kipling for 50000 alleging malicious prosecution and false arrest in 189%. The dispute followed an on road clash two years prior near Brattleboro Kipling had Balestier arrested and testified Balestier bound over to the grand jury and to keep the peace. Balestier says he has not had a chance to tell his side and seeks justice in court.

American Cereal Company forms vast national milling alliance

Chicago announces that the American Cereal Company has closed contracts for plants goodwill trademarks and processes of dozens of cereal firms. The acquired mills include Akron Cereal Cedar Rapids Siouix City Peoria Bloomington and more. Total capacity 114000 barrels daily, with a Chicago oatmeal mill to be built within a year.
