A major blaze destroyed the Rock Island arsenal storehouse and its contents last night, with an estimated property loss of about 1.9 million dollars. The three story warehouse, built 16 years ago for 50 thousand, stored army equipment valued around 1.75 million. Ammunition explosions followed, origin of the fire undetermined.

A mine fire at No 3 shaft of the Spruce mine owned by United States Steel in Eveleth Minnesota killed John O'Brien and William Matthews and left ten men escaped or rescued. The blaze started from a lantern explosion near the second level 150 feet below the surface. Ninety feet farther down twelve men faced a deadly drift as smoke and gas filled the air. Two succumbed before safety could be reached, their bodies not recovered. Firemen fought the blaze and halted further loss while ventilation saved others.
In Chicago at State and Madison a richly dressed woman about 3 ars old entered a drug store and after a series of telephones asked for 25 cents worth of carbolic acid for disinfecting. Clerk Provost intervened but the woman drank it, collapsed, and the attacker fled. initials possibly T. H. inferred from cues.

Washington reports the commerce bill approved by Congress establishes a new cabinet officer and transfers bureaus into the department including corporations labor lighthouse steamboat inspection navigation land standards coast geodetic service immigration shipping statistics foreign commerce census and fish. The Nelson amendment empowers the new Bureau of Corporations to demand specified returns from large corporations and publicizes their affairs to an extent.
London reports a wave of forgeries using J Pierpont Morgan's name. A London bank cashed two checks for 55000 dollars allegedly signed by the New York banker and later repudiated as forgeries. Art dealers had accepted the checks, and authorities warn of more similar forgeries afloat in the city.
