Washington February 6 The house Ways and Means Committee received protests against Canadian reciprocity led by print paper manufacturers. Hugo testified price increases followed the Payne Aldrich law and returned to normal after tariff agitation. Members pressed him on fixed prices and industry impact.

A large fire in a state building leads to loss of governor and state officer records. efforts to fight flames faced weak water pressure and a special train brought Sedalia fire crews to Jefferson City. A long-standing push for a new capitol building failed. the 1830s structure, built at $590,000, with a 1887 remodel at $250,000, is the second state building destroyed by fire.
Helsingfors Finland February 6 An ice built fishing town of 252 people was carried out to sea in a Friday night gale. The disaster was not found until morning as the village disappeared from sight. Rescue boats were sent but have not yet returned.
Leah Anderson, age unknown, disappeared on an errand in Keota Iowa and was found burned to death on a neighbor’s porch hours later. Ben Lipman arrested on a $200 bond for assault and battery against Miss Sara Herschberg with a hearing set for next Saturday. Also noted, a Canadian dock project at Esquimalt will begin for warship construction per Ottawa message.
Lieutenant Stein of the German military aviation service died when his aircraft fell during a flight over the Doeberitz military aviation field today. The crash occurred in Berlin.
Prize winners at the national corn show were announced in Columbus Ohio. Stephen Henry of Melrose Iowa and Jerry Moore of Winona South Carolina 15 year olds won per acre production prizes earning an automobile and a ribbon. First prize world winners included Oats Fred McCulloch Belle Plain Iowa Timothy seed H W Burey South Amama Iowa Clover seeds Belle Plain and Fred Meulioch. General Cronje dead.
The Senate appropriations committee completed the army bill at 93 675 586 dollars an increase over the house measure with a savings of 1 761 982 for the current year. Drag for Ashhurst. New York February 6 William F Sheehan confirmed that Charles F Murphy will stay with him in the United States senate race Murphy previously said he would withdraw but now remains in the fight The issue is not whether Sheehan is elected but whether the state will uphold representative government through its leadership

In Des Moines Feb 6 Judge Smith McPherson ordered the receiver for the Fort Dodge Des Moines and Southern to discontinue service on the Des Moines Junction to Newton section. The court ruled the segment was built to attract a sale to another company and that promoters likely profited from inflated costs.
