Dead in storm at Grand Rapids harness factory ruins
Seven men were killed and several injured when a high wind toppled the north wall of the Brown & Sebler harness factory ruins on West Bridge street. The deceased include Fred May, Thomas Dobroki, John Melleman, Carl Optiz, Harry Thompson, Morton J Nimeston, and an unidentified man. injured include Sheridan J. Janes, Nicholas Boerskoot, Vernon Griffin, Cornelius Prins, Homer Wright, and Albert Zeits. Workers were cleaning debris from a prior fire when the wall collapsed, trapping many beneath bricks as rescuers worked for hours to recover bodies. Police and fire crews aided in the effort.
