Secret service in San Francisco traced a Berkeley published issue of The Revolution that in English urges the assassination of the mikado and President Roosevelt. Marked copies were mailed to San Francisco's board of education, with the English articles urging violence.
In Dundee a railway collision caused by heavy snow killed 16 people and injured over 30. The crash occurred on the North British line between Edinburgh and Aberdeen near Arbroath as trains from London to Aberdeen were delayed by snow. MP Alexander William Black among the injured.
Homer Myers of Rushville, visiting at the home of Mr and Mrs Smith, lied in a room with a bullet through his body near the heart after a morning gunshot. He was found unconscious by the family. doctors said the bullet lodged in back muscles with a slight chance of recovery. No reason is known for the act.
In New York on December 29 Colonel William D. Mann editor and proprietor of Town Topics was acquitted by a jury of perjury charges tied to the Hapgood libel suit. The verdict followed a four hour deliberation after the jury retired at seven o’clock. The case centered on Mann’s testimony denying letters bearing his initials on a letter from Count Reginald H. Ward of London.
County livestock estimates show prices for livestock by age and type. Horses priced at 95 percent of last year number with $38 under one year, $60 under two, and $100 over two. Milch cows at $36 per head. other cattle $12 to $23 by age. swine averages $9. Milking and male cattle counts adjusted to 160 and 95 percent respectively.
New York December 29 Recorder Goft affirmed the conviction of Enrico Caruso the opera singer who appealed from a magistrate court decision and fined him ten dollars for annoying a woman in Central Park.
Leroy J. Kelly, 23, of Crookston Minnesota, adopted son of wealthy lumberman Michael Kelly, left Bemidji November 12 with 500 dollars for a two week trip. He went to Milwaukee where he was to deliver 400 dollars, and on November 23 left the Republican House leaving his overcoat and satchel. He has not been seen since and friends fear foul play.
The body of Mrs. Nellie Murray of Charlestown was found in the Massachusetts General Hospital yard, initially deemed a murder mystery. Autopsy showed she suffocated, likely while leaning from a window to relieve nausea and had fallen, removing the murder theory.
Rome December 29 ex secretary of the treasury Charles S Fairchild says in New York Life indictments that he personally derived no profits from the transactions and that the moves were for the benefit of New York Life policy holders. He will return to America immediately if necessary.
Isaac Raines, a noted forger with international reputation, operated as a representative of the Associated Press in Germany, France, and the United States and has been arrested in Spokane Washington on December 29.
New York reports the Erie Railroad ferry Paterson sank after a midstream collision with a freight lighter on the Hudson River near Twenty-third Street Jersey City. All aboard were saved but 18 marketmen horses drowned. Washington says Taft denies presidential ambition and will not run. Dixon progresses on Y M C A fund drive aiming for $20,000.
New Haven December 29 endorsement of the official simplified spelling board plan and agreement to use it in the journals of the Modern Language Association of America. The 300 words already published were sanctioned with personal usage exceptions allowed. Des Moines Iowa December 29 the Iowa state teachers convention adjourned after adopting resolutions favoring simplification of English spelling.
London reports formal acceptance by the United States of James Bryce as British ambassador at Washington in succession to Sir Mortimer Durand. The acceptance was received by cable and will be officially gazetted Monday. The move clarifies the prior apparent misunderstanding from Roosevelt’s earlier note.
Mobile Alabama December 29 The Chicago and Gulf railroad was placed in the hands of receivers by order of the chancery court of New Albany Mississippi. The line is part of the Mobile Jackson and Kansas City system recently placed in receivership.
Champaign County farmers gathered at the Urbana courthouse on December 29, voting against continuing state aid for hard roads beyond the two year limit. They also endorsed a reciprocal demurrage law aimed at protecting shippers and backed the highway commission experiments.

In Alton Illinois five merchants were fined for child labor law violations for employing underage workers, including J J Ried for May Quinn under 16.
Rome reports the death of Cardinal Cavagnis and Cardinal Tripepi from strokes of apoplexy. Cardinal Luigi Tripepi, born in Italy, was prefect of the Congregation of Indulgences and Sacred Relics and made a cardinal in 1901. Cardinal Felice Cavagnis, born in 1841, also was created a cardinal in 1901.
In Kalamazoo Michigan a deal closed by the First National Bank saw the New York Central Railroad purchase the Chicago Kalamazoo and Saginaw line. The price is undisclosed but around 1 million dollars. The new firm forms with no change to local management and general offices stay in Kalamazoo. The purchase holds great significance for Michigan’s region.
The State Department reports the U S government through its London ambassador has pledged support to Great Britain in any steps toward improving conditions in the Congo. The statement emphasizes allied cooperation toward amelioration of affairs in the region.
James J. Hill, president of the Great Northern, will retire from active business and management on July 1 1907. His son Louis J. Hill will succeed him, continuing a dynasty that rebuilt the northwest rail network and expanded to thousands of miles of track and related ventures.
A deal is proposed to consolidate the Rock Island Southern interurban operating between Galesburg and Monmouth with a survey for a line to connect either city to Rock Island. Peoples Traction currently runs a Galesburg to Abingdon route. The Southern would gain improved terminal facilities at Galesburg if the bargain is made.
John Norburg of Copley township, Knox county, was feeding a corn shredder when his left hand was pulled into the rollers. In attempting to free it, his right hand was caught as well. The left hand was amputated at the wrist and the right hand may be saved. Paris chamber confirms Count Boni de Castellane’s latest election to the Chamber valid.

A dispatch addressed to the president from E. H. Harriman announced he will transport free of charge all famine relief supplies from San Francisco to Wu Sung for Chinese sufferers. The White House received the message on December 29.
