Elbert H. Gary, chairman of United States Steel, told the House Ways and Means Committee that the steel industry should submit to government control and disclose its affairs. He argued tariff reduction would drive labor costs down, aiding independent manufacturers while the corporation could protect itself. He noted the tariff benefits independents more than US Steel.

Warrensburg Mo Dec 19 circuit court held there is no Missouri law prohibiting healing by Christian Science practitioners. Lena A Jaccard and Theresa M Haywood prominent Kansas City Christians Science practitioners were charged with practicing medicine or surgery for pay without a license.
Rockford Alabama December 19. Half the General Union of telephone operators walked off the switchboards accusing an assistant supervisor of slapping hands to stop hair or collar adjustments. They seek better treatment and double pay for Sundays and holidays. Manager Eby calls the charges ridiculous and says strikers have been replaced. Also reported death notices from Indiana: Frank Hannum of La Porte died in Seattle from football injuries at 26. Dr Thomas Gray vice president of Rose Polytechnic Institute dies after long illness in Terre Haute.
Yesterday in Washington the Senate was not in session due to holidays. The House had a reduced attendance yet managed to dispatch several war claim bills amid discussion. The chamber adjourned at 4 47 p m.
In the Ranken murder trial in Union City Tennessee testimony centers on the hanging and shooting of Captain Ranken. Witnesses identify two prisoners as band members while Fehringer confesses. Ed Powell recalls being forced along by the riders and fearing for his life after failing to recognize them.
Robbers entered Sherrard Illinois post office after midnight by prying a rear window. They blew the safe with an explosive, securing about $200 in stamps and an undetermined cash amount. No one heard the blast in the mining town, where explosions are common. They left with valuables and tools in haste.
