Tobacco factory blown up in Elkton Kentucky

A tobac co factory in Elkton owned by the American Snuff company tobacco trust was blown up by dynamite in the early hours. No one was killed though the plant was almost totally destroyed. The act is blamed on a group sympathetic to the Dark Tobacco Growers' association, which condemns the violence. A separate report from Lorain Ohio notes three buildings wrecked after master plumbers backed open shop and a carpenter who supported them was assaulted.

Cruelty Case Set for Next Week in Mercer County

The case against Mrs. Archibald McKinney of Aledo for cruelty to Stella Grady, a girl in a home finding association, is likely to go to trial next week with Judge Emery Co Graves presiding. Judge Gest is cited as a witness on insanity links among relatives of the defendant.

Farmers organize to oppose dam raising on Rock River

South of Rock River farmers met at Mound View school to plan a permanent group. They consider forming a drainage district or a bi river district to protect rights as the dam on Rock River to boost Black Water navigation for the Hennepin Canal is proposed. An engineer will assess overflow damage before owners unite to safeguard interests.

New Land Frauds Two Men Sought Over Forged Certificates in Oregon

In Salem a bundle of forged land certificates passed to the school board clerk. They show forged signatures on state paper and were traced to S. A D. Puter who is convicted in conspiracy with Horace McKinley and others to defraud public lands. Mueller Lumber Co of Davenport Iowa holds genuine certificates. Puter and McKinley are at large. Also Iowa supreme court rules a voter must vote in the precinct where he sleeps, not where he eats.

Stanford and California Faculty Back Rugby Substitution Plan

The athletic committees of Stanford University and the University of California adopted a resolution denouncing current American football rules. They recommend introducing rugby as a substitute and ending intercollegiate football contests under the existing rules committees.

Gas Kills Iowa Man in Chicago Hotel Room

R W Geeseka of Mt Pleasant Iowa was found dead in a Chicago Palmier house room due to gas from an open jet. Police believe the jet was left open accidentally in the room.

Retail Merchants Plan Midwest Coal Dealers Convention

At a Rock Island meeting the Retail Merchants and Illinois Wisconsin coal dealers invite Iowa Nebraska and Illinois Wisconsin groups to hold a joint convention in June with over 300 delegates. A river trip to St Paul may follow. The group discusses freight rates garnishment limits and proposed legislation.

Bethany Home Seeks Gilpin Moore Property Occupancy

Bethany Home Protective Association aims to occupy the Gilpin Moore house on Fifth Avenue Rock Island within two weeks and vacate the Silvis residence in South Rock Island. Ten thousand dollars will be paid to owner E. W. Lewis with four thousand five hundred received now and the rest at abstract completion. Minor repairs and repainting will precede occupancy. about two to three hundred dollars will be spent. The association has about forty dollars from rummage sales and pledges remain to cover most of the remaining funds.

Nantucket relief lightship crew saved after sinking

Persis tent saved by hand bailers for 24 hours and wireless aid brought 15 men from relief lightship No 56 before it sank minutes after crew abandoned to a lifeboat. Wasp gunboat, Newport reports no alarm and will head to port as fog lifts. Halifax wires report heavy coast damage with many vessels ashore but no loss of life.

Masons Plan Special Train to Geneseo Friday Evening

About one hundred members of Rock Island Lodge No. 658 A F and A M will ride a Rock Island line special train from Twentieth Street Depot at 7 10 PM to Geneseo Friday. The return will leave Geneseo at midnight. Stewart Lodge No. 92 of Geneseo invited them to exemplify the third degree.

Midshipman Meriweather of Washington is sentenced to one year confinement at the naval academy and to a public reprimand by the secretary of the navy. He was acquitted of manslaughter but found guilty of violating navy conduct articles prohibiting fisticuffs and conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline.

Mrs. Rogers’ execution described as grisly in Vermont

In Windsor Vermont on December 12 Mrs. Rogers the Bennington murderess was reported strangled to death. Deputies allegedly hoisted her after the rope stretched, while the crowd and press were sworn to secrecy, claiming a lawful and uneventful hanging despite a brutal scene.

Beef Hearing Opens in Chicago for Beef Trust Trials
