London reports say Britain and Germany pressed Venezuela with ultimatums requiring settlement within a brief period. Caracas notes ministers Haggard and Baltuzzi left for La Guaira aboard ships, with legations closed. Foreign office hints at possible extension but not immediate resolution. no decisive action expected in coming days.
The foreign office denies coercion of Venezuela, attributing actions to persistent protests and insulting disregard of representations. It cites late time for purely diplomatic remedies and notes a financial settlement would have been welcomed by Germany and Britain, while promising careful consideration of any bona fide proposal. Rome December 9. Thirteen anarchists were arrested after a desperate struggle when police raided a meeting as they were taking an oath to kill King Victor Emanuel. One anarchist and one policeman were severely wounded.
In Portland Maine on December 9 a solemn service was held for former Speaker Reed at First Parish Unitarian Church. Governors of Maine and Massachusetts and many dignitaries attended. The body was later placed in Evergreen Cemetery vault awaiting spring burial.
In Indianapolis on December 9, organized labor intensified its campaign against militia enlistments. Second Lieutenant George Cook of Elk Hart resigned under pressure from the Press Feeders' union, of which he is a member. Cook had served in the National Guard and was up for promotion. AFL organizer David Kennedy has been touring towns urging laborers to avoid militia service. Unions have adopted by laws, and withdrawals from the militia have increased.
The saloon hold up suspect who drowned in the lake near Milwaukee has been named at the morgue as a career criminal known to police as Mysterious Jim. Records list a fifteen year Iowa sentence for shooting a conductor and prior sentences in Sheboygan and a prior arrest twelve years ago. He reportedly worked alone and was ready to shoot at the slightest provocation.

President Castro says Venezuela did not increase debt and paid obligations during the revolution. All doubt about the fate of the barge Celtic, commanded by Capt. Jeffrey of Detroit with eight crew, was removed when news arrived from Thessalon, Ontario that life boats papers and wreckage from the Celtic had washed ashore there after breaking away in the Lake Huron gale on November 30.

Four miners were killed and ten injured when a dynamite box exploded at a Lehigh and Wilkes Barre Coal Co mine in South Wilkes Barre. Victims named include Robert Humblebee Arthur Jones Matthew Phillips and James McGlynn. Rescue efforts slowed by damp in the gaseous mine environment.
