At Horton in Cabell County five coal miners were suffocated by smoke when a ventilator stack in a drift mine caught fire and burned away late yesterday. The victims were identified as workers at the mine and perished in the blast of smoke.
Twelve of sixteen teams started the six day bicycle race in New York. The leaders were tied on 594 miles with three hours left today, five miles behind the world record. Teams Castro and Vanoni Krebs and Peterson Dove and Scott have withdrawn.

A push in Atlanta seeks to turn the battlefield sites around the city into a national military park with a connecting boulevard. Murray Sullivan, a victim of Sheriff Heider's Moline gambling raid, pleaded guilty to keeping a gaming house, paid $100 and costs. Frank Miller pleaded guilty to two charges of obtaining money under false pretenses, posted $25 and costs for each count, and went to jail after failing to reappear.
Mrs. Laisa Schafer files for divorce from James G. Schafer alleging extreme cruelty in multiple acts including a knockdown blow that left her unconscious for two hours and another strike that broke her nose. Mrs Irene Berry remains inside the railway coach blocked on the tracks at Girard Kansas since Friday. She has limited food and water access and warned officers she would kill her enemies but does not want to kill everyone. Police continue not to pursue capture actions at this time.
About 100000 was well anu lost the recent game between Massillon and Canton for the Football championship of Ohio. Massillon won 14 to 4. High pay for players noted at both sites. Blondy Wallace received 250 for Canton. Heston 500 and Cure 300 for Canton. Massillon stars Schrantz Lang Drake and McChesney led the win. Canton’s team was said to be stripped. Massillon reportedly far behind before the game but benefited financially afterward.
In Constantinople through Sofia, ministers yield to the powers in principle but the sultan has not issued approval. Separately, a fire in Manassas Virginia destroyed the business district at about 2 am, with estimated losses exceeding $100,000.

Eldidge, VP of Mutual Reserve Life, testified that the company paid 15000 to Mr McDonald of Philadelphia in 1899 to stave off a suit by policyholders to oust Frederick A Burnham from the presidency. Brockway, Ashland House proprietor and director, admitted he worked for the insurer for part of a year and that he later gave Burnham 6000 in gifts.
Herman Kane a farmer seven miles north of Geneseo is in Hammond hospital likely fatally hurt after a runaway wagon detour on Saturday night. He was thrown from the wagon a mile from Geneseo and badly bruised on the frozen ground. His young son, riding in the wagon, stayed aboard and arrived home safe as the horses continued six miles without a driver.
Elk River sheriff collapsed unable to pull the drop during the hanging of D. Crawford for the murder of Heine Lundeen in a box car near here. Sheriff Fentek of St. Cloud operated the trap, Crawford died by the fall while the Elk River official recovered. A separate note mentions Japan ending a long tradition by allowing foreigners to own land and mortgage real estate, and Manchester received a record banana cargo of 57,000 bunches from Costa Rica.
A vast roof at the Char ing Cross rain line station collapsed in the afternoon injuring about 30 people who were taken to hospitals. One person died at once and many others are in critical condition with several dead reported among the ruins.
