William Jennings Bryan spoke at the Minnesota State Fair grounds critiquing Republican extravagance. He argued military spending has swollen annual appropriations by 120 million dollars since 1897 and urged tax reductions, appealing especially to farmers and those in agriculture.
A blaze in New Orleans yesterday caused about 1.4 million dollars in damage with 62 concerns affected. Firemen faced delays and were blamed by witnesses for the slow water supply and weak pressure during the long effort to control the flames.

Chicago Aug. 31 Charles A. Lawson confidential secretary to J. T. Harahan president of the Illinois Central railroad jumped from the steamer City of Benson Harbor with his body weighted and drowned. The drowning occurred Saturday. The identity of the man was not learned until today.
A special train carrying Eugene V. Debs and James H. Brown plus other Socialist leaders left Chicago for San Francisco over the Alton. The trip titled an educational campaign will include speeches in major cities and towns from Chicago to the Pacific coast.
An official order signed by President Lewis of the United Mine Workers calling off the Birmingham district strike was issued today. The strike began July 6 and featured violence, ending with mines in the district operating on a non union basis.
Report from Columbus Ohio dated August 31 notes the Queen Louise balloon landed in Lake Erie near Buffalo yesterday with both occupants rescued. The Chicago balloon, launched last night, descended near St Paris Ohio about 50 miles west of Columbus.

Chicago Cubs beat New York Giants 2 to 1 to seal a three game series. Hoffman and Sheckard drove runs with Chance scoring on a key single. The series attendance reached a Chicago record of 74 000 as the Cubs moved into second place in the National League pennant race.
Oyster Bay Aug 31 Ideal weather favored the Olympic heroes as they paraded to Sagamore Hill and received an official welcome from President Roosevelt. American Commissioner James E Sullivan introduced each victorious athlete who received a hearty handshake and congratulations.
After a lengthy debate the Central Federated Union endorsed the Elevator Constructors and Millwrights' union resolution pledging support to the American Federation of Labor to defeat the Republican party and back Bryan and the Democratic ticket in the coming election. Several delegates argued against taking sides in party politics.
Atlantic City New Jersey reports the largest crowd of the year as 150000 visitors fill the resort on Sunday. Despite closures ordered by the governor bars remained shut, yet hospitality venues benefited from dryness with room parties and social clubs buying liquor on Saturday. Police reported no disturbances and called it the tightest Sunday for the resort this year.
General Alexander P. Stewart, one of the last two Confederate lieutenant generals, died at his Biloxi home in his 87th year after a long life that included West Point, service with the Army of Tennessee, and later a tenure as chancellor of the University of Mississippi. He was born October 2, 1821 in Rogersville Tennessee and married Harriet B. Chase in 1845.
Louisa Ky Aug 31 John Sprouse was brought from near Cherokee to escape mob violence. He is accused of setting fire to Charles Cooper residence Saturday, destroying property and killing two of Cooper's children. Cooper his wife and two children were seriously burned. Sprouse and Cooper had been in a lumber lawsuit.
Des Moines Iowa August 31 Governor Cummins delivers a message urging lawmakers to provide for election of a U S senator. The report notes the legislature's upcoming session and the gubernatorial push amid political debate.
Special session of the legislature calls for amending the ousted king to allow Republicans to nominate a senator this fall. The body stresses duty to elect a successor to the late Senator Allison for the short term or face vacancy until the next legislature. The Dutch stance also rejects Castro’s treatment of its minister as improper and notes naval etiquette in Gelderland’s LaGuaira visit.
