In Chicago at the Saratoga hotel Charles F. E. Andrews shot and killed his former lover Ethel Blaine in their room, then shot himself while being taken to a hospital. Blaine wrote a letter to the killer’s son as she died. Andrews had abandoned his wife and family years before in Elkhart Indiana. The case drew police attention as investigators pursued motives and identities.
Fire swept through Hakodate on August 27 destroying nearly 70 percent of the 100000 population. Firemen struggled while most consulates were summoned and distress spread among residents. The harbor city sits at the island's western edge with docks naval schools and manufactories.

After committee reports, officers were elected for three months followed by ice cream and cake. New officers: President Dr. W. E. Martin Kirst, Vice President H. K. Walker, Second Vice President IS, FE, Mathews, Secretary S. F. Mowry, Treasurer C. G. Pinkerton.
Chicago lawyer John F. Geeting calls for a reformist Arcadian town for nonviolent offenders. A country garden city with cottages and moral suasion would replace harsh jails, guiding petty swindlers toward botany and virtue. The plan, to be written for Illinois legislature, is announced alongside Illinois Theater Labor Day events.

Silvis grocers Fred and William Hocker, doing business as Hocker Bros., filed for bankruptcy in Peoria federal court with debts unknown and assets listed at 1800 dollars. The brothers, residents of Colchester in McDonough County, started the Silvis venture but failed. The first creditors meeting is set at Judge McCulloch's Peoria office ten days hence.
