James M. Shumaker former Harrisburg public buildings head says he will make a full confession tied to capitol graft and state treasury manipulation. He asserts high officials engineered funds moves to mask a statewide shortage as trial nears in September.
The 64th annual Rock Island Baptist association session will be at Silvis Baptist Church on Aug 27 28 and 29 with Rock Island Mercer and Henry counties churches totaling about 2000 members. Officers include Moderator Rev B F Martin and Clerk Treasurer Rev W C Rutherford. The program features devotional services addresses on Sunday school impact and Christian decision, reports, election of officers, and a Thursday morning prayer service and reports.
San Francisco reports the street car strike may end soon with the waylaid means committee of strikers arranging with United Railroads to call off. Car men will return individually and no union membership questions will be asked. Arbitration will settle wage and hour disputes, potentially allowing 35 000 building trades union members and families to ride the cars despite any union action. President Cornelius says national officers contend the strike remains on, likely causing confusion.
Secretary of the Interior Garfield, telegraphed by Secretary of War Taft, arrived in Lexington late last night to meet Taft. The two secretaries spoke privately with no statement issued. Mrs J H Connell widow of Judge Connell of Aledo died Monday in Chicago after a long illness following her husband’s death and the loss of a favorite nephew John Arthur. She was 59 years old and many attributed her death to a broken heart.
At Buffalo August 22 the National Fraternal Congress rejected any amalgamation with the Associated Fraternities of America. A heated session saw threats to secede. after 11 minutes a vote struck the proposal from consideration. The election of officers followed, with A R Talbot favored by amalgamationists for president but the anti union side prevailing.
In New York the Commercial Telegraphers union seeks arbitration with companies as President Small plans talks. Western Union chief Brooks rejects meeting any strike leader. Perham of the Railway Telegraphers pledges potential $100,000 support to aid strikers, who say they can sustain until December 1. Railroads request experienced operators as many telegraphers shift to clerical posts.
New York city raised the rate on bonds for sale from 4 to 4.5 percent due to money market stringency. The mayor ordered all departments to curb spending to the lowest level compatible with efficient administration.
