Thaw Taken Fugitive on Canada Soil

Canadian authorities declare Harry K Thaw will be deported from Canada under immigration laws and may be surrendered to the United States at the New York border. Sheriff Kelcey of Colebrook NH identified him on a train and pursued to Hermetskilde Garford, where Thaw was arrested and recommitted to Sherbrooke jail awaiting extradition proceedings.

Mexico City blast kills and wounds hundreds on Tacubiya tracks

A car laden with dynamite crashed into a dynamite laden vehicle on Tacubiya streetcar tracks in Mexico City. The blast destroyed houses within 500 feet, leaving more than a hundred dead and wounded, mostly women and children. Many buildings were adobe and collapse left little standing. In Danville Illinois another fatal auto crash killed farmer Alva Langelier when his car plunged off an embankment.

Sulzer impeachment creates acting governorship in New York

Albany Aug 19 The New York assembly voted to impeach Governor William Sulzer, triggering Lieut. Gov. Glynn as acting governor until Sulzer’s trial ends. Attorney General Carmody issued an opinion upholding the transfer of powers to Glynn and affirming the assembly’s right to impeach despite extraordinary session. Glynn and advisers delayed a trustees meeting, awaiting guidance and with Glynn planning to use the lieutenant governor’s room as the executive office. Sulzer, while impeached, appeared in better spirits as Mrs. Sulzer’s improving condition eased his worries.

In Cambier Bay the State of California sank after striking an uncharted rock. 10 bodies recovered and 16 passengers listed as missing. Washington Aug 19 Capital pawnbrokers testified before the house lobby committee charging they contributed 7500 to Rep McDermott of Illinois to defeat the federal loan shark law. I Heidenheimer said 4754 was spent to beat the bill, but not how. He swore none went to McDermott, but 560 was given to the Democratic national campaign fund to aid the Democratic congressman.
