Allied troops breach Pekin by opening the eastern gates and enter the city. Other forces advance by alternate routes as Japanese defenders are overwhelmed.
Shanghai reports the August 15 attack on Pekin with Japanese and allied forces breaching the eastern gates and entering the capital. Minsters and staff are found safe at the legations. Japanese and allied casualties exceed 100 and 400 Chinese killed. Reports from Chefoo and London confirm fall of Pekin and safe legations.
New York reports 14 anarchists under arrest at the detention prison bureau of emigration charged with conspiring to assassinate McKinley. Earlier, two Italians Mare and Gui were detained at quarantine and may be deported, while Maresca a convict aged 20 is linked to the case.
A Ber report from Delagoa Bay states General Dewet attacked by surprise, defeated British forces, and captured 4,000 men. The dispatch cites heavy losses on the British side and no immediate details on casualties or subsequent moves.
