In Cleveland on August 14 a Nickel Plate passenger train and a freight collided at Kishmans due to a possible orders misunderstanding. Twelve were killed including engineer Charles W. Poole and several crew members. many others were seriously injured with multiple fractures and internal injuries.
Crowds gathered at the land office as nearly a quarter million acres were opened for homesteading after cattlemen’s fences were torn down by government order. Strangers filled the town and hundreds slept outdoors as all transport was flooded. The Temeraire, a Canadian challenger, defeated the American defender Iroquois in a Canada Cup yacht race off Charlotte New York August 14. Temeraire led from the start at 11:00:15 and finished about a mile ahead with a final time of 1:21:47 to 1:26:51 for Iroquois.
Twelve deaths reported in New Orleans yesterday set a new epidemic record while new cases fell by more than half from the day before. Doctors see cautious hope in comparisons with past outbreaks as the disease slowly spreads. Plaquemine parish health officials report twelve cases near Point A La Hache. Roosevelt reportedly objected to the precautions but accepted after Erie President Underwood’s orders were shown. Paterson police relayed alerts of a plot near Ridgewood, N J.
Sayville report: Gladys Roosevelt 16 and Eugenie 18, cousins of President Roosevelt, were injured when a horse drawing a high cart ran wild and struck a tree. Gladys died after an hour of futile treatment. physicians believed a fractured skull. Nevada volcano sighted: three cowmen found lava emitting from a volcano in Humboldt County with audible rumblings.
