Penney Kan Aug 10 Ten days mimic warfare began here today with the opening of the annual maneuvers. Five thousand men and officers coming from posts in Iowa Nebraska Arkansas and Kansas are participating. Brigadier General John B Kerr commandant of this fort is in command. The program for the first four days will be formations for attack and defense.
The Gloucester schooner Maggie and May was run down by the German school ship Freya sixty miles off Halifax harbor on Saturday night. Captain Eric McCatharan and eight crew members died. Freya arrived with four survivors aboard. The schooner had a crew of nineteen.
