Five thousand troops engaged are being divided into blue and brown armies. The clash divides forces and leaves numerous injuries reported as the conflict unfolds with ongoing troop realignments and preliminary casualty counts.
First Lieutenant John F. James, two privates of the 8th Infantry, Surgeon Calvin Snyder and Internal Revenue Collector Williams of Illinois, were killed in a hand to hand fight with Pulajanes at Julita Leyte. The detachment of 10 outnumbered men fought bravely. three pistols, four Krag rifles and 300 rounds were captured.
Chicago, Aug. 10. Henry W. Hering, cashier of the wrecked Milwaukee Avenue State bank, surrendered to police and underwent a lengthy examination by the state's attorney into President Stensland's million dollar forseries. He maintained his innocence while admitting knowledge of the bank’s insolvency for several years and was remanded to the Harrison street station as prosecutors prepare to press charges to the limit.
Chicago Aug 10 Harmony ruled at the Republican county convention with a smooth ticket. Democrats endured a stormy session, led toward harmony by Roger Sullivan. Leading candidates include Sheriff Harry Gibbons and others across clerk, judge, treasurer, and schools posts.
Justice Johnson dismissed the case against Fred Dodge, a waiter at the Pacific restaurant opposite the Rock Island depot, for refusing to serve C. A. Kennedy, a colored porter. Kennedy paid the costs and withdrew his charge this morning.
Indianapolis experts report James H. Rice who served as Indiana auditor from 1883 to 1887 left the office in a deficit of 20000 dollars. The inquiry shows Rice and his predecessors collected insurance tax fees. suits to recover those fees are pending and have reached the supreme court. Rice is long deceased and his estate was distributed to heirs.
The secretary of state issued a license to incorporate today to the Lutheran Augustana synod of Rock Island. The object is religion and there is no capital stock. Incorporators are Alfred Appell, Victor Tengwald, and Samuel Alderson.
Berlin dispatch says the Cologne Gazette rejects any German desire to interfere in favor of Russia or its imperial family. Paris reports an address by leading French lawmakers and scholars praising the outlawed Russian parliament as a bulwark for Russia's hopes.
Indianapolis reports the Indiana state board of health bans kissing in schools from after the vacation, promising strict enforcement and a nationwide campaign. The notice warns teachers to curb all kisses including cheeks or gestures among girls and boys, with broad “don’t” rules on mouth contact and oral handling of objects.
The agriculture department reports corn condition Aug 1 at 88.1 percent, up from 87.5 last month. Winter wheat yield estimated at 493,434,000 bushels and 16.7 bushels per acre. Spring wheat condition Aug 1 at 86.9 versus 91.4 last month.
Washington reports a telegram from San Domingo stating John Milbourn and Charles P. Thurston were killed by smugglers near Tas Matas on August 5. Milbourn was a San Domingo inspector and Thurston a deputy receiver of customs. Tas Matas lies near the Haitian frontier. In Chicago, a rival labor union, the United Teamsters of America, formed to challenge the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with plans to delay elections until after Shea’s convention ends. Frank Morrison and Samuel Gompers urge anti Shea factions to halt the move.
Four men jailed for contempt in the franchise election fraud inquiry remain behind bars. William Evans, Tramway general manager, may join them after his office was found locked while he was subpoenaed to testify. A tramway and gas company exodus to avoid explaining tax receipts used for voting was noted. Ward Fourteen ballot box contents showed an 85 vote discrepancy between poll books and box totals.
Boston August 10. Rt. Rev. William Lawrence bishop of Massachusetts denies involvement with the so called Address Chain of Prayer. He says the scheme was started by a demented or mischievous person and he has nothing to do with it.
In New York on August 9 two chauffeurs died and two were injured when a racing car crashed into a farm wagon near the Winfield crossing of the Long Island railroad. The car reportedly traveled at least 50 miles an hour. The wagon driver escaped unharmed by leaping clear before impact.
In Providence R I Aug 10 Bishop J F Regis Caney of Pittsburg was reelected president of the Catholic Total Abstinence Union at the national convention. Rev M J Carran Wilkes barre Pa Rev Austin J OToole of this city and Mrs Lefora I Lake of St Louis named vice presidents, Washington Loeb Pittsburg reappointed secretary.
Copenhagen reports the International League of Women Suffragists voted to hold the next conference in Holland in 1908 and to publish an official English paper for the suffrage cause. In Hamilton, Madge Morrey owes her life to Charles Skillen of Richmond, Indiana after a canoe capsized rescue near the Hamilton reservoir. In Ann Arbor, William Edwards, admitted for pneumonia, has shed 150 pounds in ten weeks, dropping from 300 to 150 pounds.

New York Aug 10 A large percentage of railroad tugboats affected by Wednesday nights strike of several hundred deck hands were running today Some lines granted the demands while others operated tugs with new crews across the city.
A coroner's jury in Aledo finds Mrs. Clay Glancy died by her own hand in an outhouse. daughter Mary 7 says she was not hanging and the rope was not present. Husband Glancy testified rope broke when he found his wife. inquest rumors of cutting the body down denied by neighbor reports. In Jamestown, federal grand jury indicts Standard Oil New York, Pennsylvania Railroad, and Vacuum Oil Rochester for interstate commerce violations. Separate New York case: six indictments by grand jury on railroad rebates tied to sugar investigations.
Edward L. Delaney and Amanda Erwin McDonough agreed to die together after life’s darker side. Late Wednesday night Delaney shot McDonough and then himself in a populated vacant slot, dying hours later in hospital. Delaney ran a local drug business once ruined by drink. the couple remained conscious until treatment.
London August 1 The war office published the royal commission report into South African war stores scandals. It clears officials of the worst corruption charges but finds losses of about 5 million dollars due to grave mismanagement and incompetence. The commission criticizes several officers and public servants and accuses some noncommissioned officers of accepting bribes. The army service corps is condemned as lacking business training and experience.
The Interstate Commerce Commission finds Paul Morton and other Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe officials free of criminal intent after rebating convictions. It notes the $15,000 Santa Fe fine ends a long case, commends Roosevelt and Moody, and recalls prior DOJ attempts and civil actions tied to coal and Colorado iron traffic.
Justice Howard ruled in favor of the Mutual Life Insurance Company administration and the state superintendent of insurance. The action by policy holders to compel removal of names from the anti policyholders ticket failed, marking a victory for the Mutual directors.
