The gravest apprehensions are felt for the safety of the imprisoned ministers in Peking. Li Hong’s alleged statement claims it is absolutely impossible for the allies to escort the Winters to Tien-Tsia, highlighting the seriousness of the situation as the allied movement advances and the Chinese government resists to the full extent.

In Butte Montana on August 9 a shaft at the Parrott claim was set ablaze by a nearby mine team, causing extensive damage and insurance losses. No lives were lost though several workers suffered burns while fighting the blaze. The incident left the shaft machinery ruined and parts of the eastern timbering burned, with fears of further shaft damage. Tampa and Portland brief notes follow with health and obituary items.
