Harry Tracy the outlaw and escaped convict was cornered by a Creston posse near Fellows Spokane on August 6. In a swamp duel Tracy was wounded in the leg and, with his capture look imminent, killed himself with a revolver. Citizens of Creston to receive the reward.
A historical timeline documents Tracy’s violent escapes from 1897 to June 18, 1899. It chronicles killings, jail escapes, robberies, and multi‑county pursuits across Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and nearby towns, with numerous holds ups and rider escapes. Authorities pursued Tracy and Merritt as militia and citizens hunted the fugitive.
Edith Sweetser daughter of George Sweetser Marion's leading banker lies gravely ill with typhoid fever. Dr B C Dale her sweetheart had a license arranged for a hurried marriage as her condition worsened. Physicians doubt recovery yet if she rallies the ceremony could occur, but prospects are poor.

Miss Mabel Canfield Wallace of Eldora to wed Wendell W. Huston of Chicago this evening. Wallace, daughter of Senator Joseph Wallace, is paired with Huston of the law firm Sullivan Huston. Bridesmaids include Enid Shaw Susan Glaspell Ruthry and Susie Nockolls.
Charles Gardner, kidnapped ten years ago at age 12 from Quincy Illinois by two tramps, unexpectedly reunited with his father in Wichita Kansas after his parents moved to Andover. Gardner says his abductors took him to Fort Worth Texas where he was forced to beg before escaping.
A California bound Grande special carrying about 300 tourists was ditched east of Florence near Swallows when Teck Creek flooded after heavy rain. A wall eight feet high swept the rear cars off the track just as the last passenger evacuated. No lives were lost.
A freight wreck on the Norfolk and Western at Peebles Ohio left one dead, four injured, and two missing after a coal train fell seventy two feet through a trestle under repair. The deceased brakeman is Robert Foley of Portsmouth. injuries include a portsmouth conductor John McArthur in critical condition and engineer Davies of Portsmouth with doubtful outcome. Two tramps aboard the train are reported missing.

Ferdinand Holzendorf petitions the district supreme court for a mandamus against Secretary of State Hay to force a case against Germany or Prussia for 500000 dollars over alleged unjust detention in a German insane asylum. Justice Hagner refused the writ, deeming the matter political and not showing a legal right. Holzendorf, a German native and U.S. naturalized citizen, was allegedly imprisoned in 1898 at Dalldorf near Berlin and freed in 1899 after being deemed sound.
Governor Savage names four new Omaha police board members under a supreme court ruling that the governor holds appointive power. The body met in city hall without Mayor Moores, who refused to preside. City Attorney Connell said the old board will seek a writ of ouster from the courts.
Chicago August 6 Injunctions were granted by Judge Chytraus to Waite Thorburn and Co and other brokers to stop settlements in the July oats deal. President Warren is barred from endorsing margins to buyers up to twenty thousand dollars. The Bank of Montreal is also enjoined from paying margins. To date thirty four injunctions have been issued as board brokers accuse leading bulls of engineering a July oats corner.
Ada Altman was shot on the way home from Rubecon as she walked alone in Woodland. The bullet lodged near her right ear and she collapsed unconscious. A passerby found her late in the afternoon and medical aid was summoned. The bullet remains, with no known motive or shooter identified.
