Tokyo reports the Matsushima sunk off Pedasores islands after a magazine explosion. 141 crew rescued, feared 200 plus including the captain lost. Cause of the blast unknown. Cadets include sons of Baron Chinda and Prince Oyama among those feared lost.
Alabama at Birmingham convention of antiadministration faction endorses independent party aims. Charles H. Scott elected permanent chairman. Negro delegation faced seating dispute but gained roles on committees. Delegates at large to national convention named Asa Stratton, Charles Alexander, W. R. Pettiford, and Charles Allison.
Eight Iowa railroads report a net passenger earnings gain of 383057 for the year ending Jan 1 1908 despite a 586000 drop in gross earnings. The 2 cent fare law appears to have benefited both railroads and travelers.
The Portuguese cortes reassembled on the 82d anniversary of Portugal’s constitutional government. Royal mourning for King Carlos and his son was suspended for the occasion as the Lisbon garrison showed up at daylight.
John Norris for the American Newspaper Publishers' association presented letters and documents to support his contentions. The International Paper Co's annual report shows production costs up 60 cents per ton while paper prices rose $12 per ton. Admiral Schley, retired, would be offered secretary of the navy if William J. Bryan wins the presidency. The navy has long been run by the bureau of navigation with a clerical secretary, and Bryan vows a clean sweep of the bureaucratic ring and a new deal. Schley says he has heard nothing official and nothing has been confided beyond Bryan's circle.
A coroner's jury in Easton Pennsylvania returned a verdict accusing Robert Bachman of murdering Irene May Smith, the child allegedly offered as a sacrifice by religious fanatics. Bachman is the uncle. the mother was released while the father remains detained and is described as insane.
New York April 30 The name of Governor Hughes will not be withdrawn from the presidential canvass until the national convention in Chicago has chosen its candidate General Stewart Woodford president of the Hughes League says at a New York delegates conference today. He denies reports that Hughes would withdraw at today's meeting.
Helena Montana April 30 District Judge J C Clements rules G D Beattie city alderman is sole heir of Mrs Mary A Pryse pet dog after the dog died February 9 following Pryse death last February Beattie is named as co heir with the dog in the will and inherits a valuable residence in Helena through the dog’s succession.
Chicago April 20 An inventor Rudolph M Hunter asserts he will produce 24 carat gold within eighteen months at $100 000 000 yearly from a Philadelphia plant. He says transmutation of silver and baser metals is possible and will defy government scrutiny, with financing from Chicago New York and Philadelphia financiers and a fortress like building to house costly machinery.
President Roosevelt calls on Representatives Hepburn Townsend Campbell and Sulzer to push substantial appropriations for a thorough study of interstate railroad practices and public accounting. In Washington on April 30 the House debated the sundry appropriation bill and rejected Senate naval amendments 187 to 42, sending the measure to conference.
In La Crosse Wisconsin on April 23 residents of Shelby suspected of setting fire to a disorderly house that opened after a new lid order took effect. Sixteen young women narrowly escaped death as firefighters worked to rescue them from the blaze.

Lumbermen representing firms with vast yellow pine holdings in the south decided to merge to conserve timber supply and maintain prices. The proposed organization would be capitalized at 200 million dollars. Mme Gould and Prince Helfe de Sagan arrived in Rome from St. Louis.

Santa Barbara, April 30 The Atlantic battleship fleet sailed at 6 this morning for Monterey where anchors will be dropped tomorrow. After one day at Monterey two squadrons will depart eight ships of the first squadron to Santa Cruz for a three day stay. A second squadron will join at Santa Cruz on May A to keep the entire fleet there for 24 hours. On May 5 Admiral Evans will resume Santa Cruz for the Golden Gate.
Fort de France Martinique April 30 Several killed and wounded in political disturbance. One victim is the mayor of Fort De France. Other reports note casualties amid unrest on the island.
Yesterday in Congress the Senate passed Senator Davis’s resolution on Choctaw and Chickasaw rolls and a pension bill calendar. In the House the sundry civil appropriation bill dominated debate as leaders urged reform and the creation of a national art gallery. Adjournment came at 4:20 p.m. and a later recess was set for 11:30 a.m. today.
London reports Premier Asquith at a Liberal gathering endorsing free trade education licensing and old age pensions while omitting home rule. In the Commons he signals near adherence to Churchill home rule pledges, prompting ironical cheers from the opposition.
