Kollum Holland April 28 A continuous flight of over one thousand miles in an aeroplane was completed here early today by French aviator Guillaux He made only two stops during the flight from Biarritz France leaving yesterday morning descending at Bordeaux and Vil lacoublay for fuel The trip took little more than 23 hours.
Denver sheriff Sulli van charged that nearly every policeman in the city takes regular tribute from women of the streets and that prominent businessmen are being blackmailed. He said he would present proof to the grand jury and alleged higher officials knew of the collection. He cited the closure of the tenderloin district and planned a campaign against cabaret performances in restaurants as part of a wider effort to curb vice.
Detroit apr 13 George v Dearing former clerk of the defunct Albion Mich National bank today was sentenced to five years in the Detroit house of correction for misapplying the banks funds. Dearings aged father and brother are now serving sentences at Leavenworth in connection with the failure of the bank.
Washington April 28 A rapidly growing situation in Mexico City faces friction between Huerta and Diaz factions of the provisional government. Armed camps divide the capital as Mondragon, minister of war, controls the citadel and artillery is stationed at Diaz’s estate 30 miles away.
Washington reports a busy final debate day on the tariff bill with Rainey Illinois Murdock and other progressive leaders on the speaking program. He argued the bill would ease consumer taxes while making great wealth pay a fair share toward government expenses.
William D. Haywood, leader of the Industrial Workers of the World, was arrested in Passaic on the way to surrender on an indictment accusing inciting riots among silk mill strikers. About ten thousand strikers gathered at the Erie station to witness the arrest and escort him to jail. Sheriff Radcliffe intervened to prevent disturbance, Haywood was brought to town by auto, bail was reportedly prepared, and fourteen picketers were arrested.
Jefferson City, Mo. April 28. The state supreme court issued an injunction at the request of the attorney general restraining 182 fire insurance companies from terminating contracts currently in force. The order does not bar future writing of new business. The companies have 10 days to show why they should not be fined for threatening to leave the state and enjoined permanently from canceling present contracts.
London April 28 Winston Churchill first lord of the admiralty scored a sharp rebuke at a parliamentary committee investigating British government Marconi contracts. He told fellow members it was an insult to be summoned to answer what he called vague and utter tattletale questions.
Washington April 28 Rog er C Sullivan and Norman E Mack were White House callers. Sullivan said he discussed the Illinois situation and offered no nominations since filling offices would be handled by Senator J Hamilton Lewis. The president nominated George E Downey Indiana to be controller of the currency succeeding Robert Placewell. Secretary Lane noted no pension commissioner candidate would be a Civil War veteran eliminating many candidates.
In Hanoi French Indo-China on April 28 a bomb hidden by a native ally of the pretender to the Annamite throne exploded on a cafe terrace killing a captain of infantry and a captain of rifles and wounding eight others. Police later found several bombs tied to a revolutionary plot linked to Prince Kwong-Te. the bomber fled.
Natchez Miss April 28 a break in the main Mississippi river levee on the west bank in upper Louisiana flooded Lower Tensas and Concordia parishes. About 20 000 people are driven from homes across roughly 900 square miles with property losses in the hundreds of thousands. Six river steamers and many motor boats were sent from Natchez and Vicksburg to aid in rescues.
Lieutenant Roger Harrison of the British army aviation corps was killed at Farnsworth when the elevator of his biplane collapsed from a height of 400 feet. In a separate item, Sycamore Illinois marked Active on 100th Birthday. Mrs Margaret Swinbank celebrated turning 100 at her Sycamore home yesterday born Kendall England. She reads without glasses and remains as spirited as one half her age.
Albany April 28 Andrew Sloan Draper former president of the University of Illinois from 1894 to 1904 died at his Albany home aged 64 from Brights disease and heart weakness. He devoted his life to public education editing The Rescue of Cuba and Self Culture for Young People and leading multiple education bodies.
A Springfield report notes a progressive party gathering where a women s conference adopted resolutions condemning activities opposing initiative and referendum. B F Harris of Champaign resigned as state committee chairman due to ill health and John F Bass of Chicago was elected to replace him.
Dr. Draper, elected by the legislature when he was a non resident, received many honors posthumously. He earned a Paris 1900 silver medal for a monograph on Educational Organization and Administration in the United States and a gold medal with two commemorative diplomas at St Louis for services to public education. He married Abbie L Lyon in 1872. they had two children, Charlotte Leland and Edwin Lydn. He belonged to the Chicago Historical Society and other educational bodies.
Walnut Ark April 28 In Thomas Ellison known as Uncle Tom who lives in Newton county is believed to be the real champion progenitor of Theodore Roosevelt principles. At 93 he has fathered 50 children and is grandfather to 126 with a great great grandfather count of 27. Ellison born in Ohio. Also reports 54 000 miners on strike in Beuthen Prussian Silesia.
Los Angeles April 23 a sacred bull prominent in many moving picture dramas was killed at a wild animal farm on the city’s fringe. The farm, home to over a hundred jungle denizens used in thrillers, was believed invaded before dawn by fanatical Hindus who considered the bull’s use sacrilegious. The animal was mutilated with knives and sharpened sticks. cages of several apes were opened but the beasts did not awaken when attendants arrived.
Crown Prince Danilo with soldiers has quitted Scutari toward the north. Only five batteries of artillery remain in the disputed city as European powers demand evacuation. A protest from Montenegro’s representative in London denounces the demand and calls for Montenegrin equality with Balkan allies.
