April 23 report states Secretary Moody believes prosecutions of San Juan naval officers on smuggling charges may become persecution unless local officials change stance. Governorrt tries to ease friction as possible withdrawals of officers are discussed.
Secretary Root approves board recommendations for rifle marksmanship awards. National Guard and militia invited to department competitions with regular troops, from states within the department. Guards may use government rate ranges when not conflicting with army needs. 1904 national trophy to be contested at a Midwest rifle range. Non military citizens urged to join rifle clubs to improve proficiency.
North Western Star Oil plant exploded at noon in Minneapolis on April 23. A fierce fire raged as the plant was destroyed. Twenty workers were missing and forty one accounted for as search efforts continued.
Washington reports conclusive official notices from the Philippines record discovery of valuable islands not on charts. No other government has claimed the territory. Secretary Moody moves to chart the islands as United States property after confirming no valid claim from any government.
At Spring Valley Wisconsin a wreck on the Spring Valley branch left William Stuhefeier of Minneapolis dead and three others injured. The train parted at the hilltop the detached coach ran back and struck an oncoming train. Most aboard escaped by jumping from the runaway car. The injured include Adolph Simonson James Mullin and a missing pumpman. The dead and injured were rushed to St Paul.
Rakomo Indiana April 5 Justice 148 W Dehaven aged 72 faced Minor Sewell a local pugilist in court over provoke charges. Sewell tried to intimidate the court and was slammed against the wall by the aging justice who choked him until restrained. Sewell was then left on the floor outside the courtroom while Dehaven vowed to press both provoke and contempt charges.
Chicago report doubts Martin Marooney’s tale of knowing the Jennie Hickey case. He claimed engagement to Ant Anna Pellarin who did not arrive in Chicago until two years after Hickey’s disappearance. Attorney Charles N. Hardy failed to appear to corroborate Marooney.
In Omaha on April 23 a group of business men formed an alliance to fight labor unions. They state the aim is to protect members rights to manage their business and hire as they see fit, pledging to meet union interference with organized force. The platform includes freedom to employ union or non union labor without discrimination, and no cap on output. A separate note mentions a silver fitted Irish motorcar being built in Dublin for a Boston millionaire.
In St Petersburg and Tokyo reports, Russian officials denounce Britain's Baghdad railway policy and alliance with Japan as a threat to czarist ambitions in China and Manchuria. Moscow plans unprecedented naval and military moves while Tokyo cautions that Japan must ready for conflict to resist Russian expansion.
Arbor day was observed across Nebraska with school involvement and tree planting. Banks closed though most business continued. Nebraska City held Morton Memorial exercises while Lincoln officials planted trees and dedicated Morton Creek on state grounds. The Morton Memorial Association advances a Morton monument in memory of J Sterling Morton founder of Arbor Day.
In Towanda Pennsylvania on April 22 William Barnes of Luthersville with his son Frank attempted to murder Charlee Th by shooting through a cell grating after being admitted to a car. A revolver was handed to the father and two shots hit Charlee Th one in the left breast and one in the left hand. Both Barnes and his son were arrested with charges of attempted murder. The boy was discharged while the father was admitted to bail.
Chicago April 23 The recount of the Lorimer Durborow ballots, begun under police protection weeks ago, was resumed by election commissioners today. It is estimated about 30 days will be needed to finish the operation.
In Somaliland near Galli, a British column under Col Cobbe met reverses on April 17 after reconnoitering toward Wabval. Of 208, 17 were killed including 10 Somali soldiers. The British transport Harding arrived from Berbera with the report of the setback and losses totaling 220 men in the force.
Pottsville April 24 thousands of Reading company mine workers locked out for working 60 hours a week may return if they pledge to work full time. Superintendent Tather says compliance required. In Shenandoah district officials from Wilkes Barre poised action as others plan to resume after conciliation. Mitchell leader of miners weighs terms and talks with coal interests. Also Ohio plan urges Panhandle West Virginia miners to return to work to end strike over screen conditions affecting about 500 men out since April 1.
Detroit April 2 Jack Root defeated Kid McCoy in a ten round boxing bout, with Root dominating from start to finish as McCoy offered little counter. The event closed amid a loud crowd and reports noted Root’s lefts and rights to the body and face securing the decision.
Cinnabar Montana April 43. President Roosevelt arrives after a six day interior tour of Yellowstone with sledges horses skis and pack gear. Secretaries Loeb reports the president in good health and high enthusiasm as the party travels by snow clad routes through high deep snows. The party plans to proceed to St Louis the following afternoon.
Lansing Michigan April 2 The house considered the Van Zoeren Dit aimed at the St Joseph amp erii n ce Industry The bill was tally killed by a vote of 46 029 Van Zoeren proposed measures to prohibit Sunday marriages by Chicago non residents five days before the ceremony Lane urged saving certificates from Chicago divorce courts and Rodgers Muskegon offered a slower Sunday marriage prohibition.
Naples Ap The royal Saint Victoria and Albert with King Be ward on board arrived here today and received an enthusiastic welcome.
The annual gathering of archbishops of the Church in America convened in Washington this morning. Cardinal Gibbons presided over the body as discussions touched on church unity and the proposed apostolic use. Archbishop Keane delivered the afternoon sermon after the laying ceremony.
Riots in Kiehinef, capital of Bessarabia, April 20 left many dead and fatally injured as workers attacked Jewish residents. Interior Minister Max orders measures to restore order in the town and district.
In the west end quarrel justice salved wounds with modest fines. George Switzer faced disorderly conduct charges and paid 83. The Switzer family pressed a complaint against Pat Trottnow for striking Flora Swittee, while a 13 year old named Push received a $3 fine. Earlier, Moody Fight in Mororce Tangiers records a tribal attack with many casualties.
