Yesterday in Washington the House worked late to process numerous amendments to the Payne tariff bill under a special rule. An amendment by Mr. Clark of Missouri set iron ore and No. 16 gauge steel wire duty at three fourths of a cent per pound but was later discarded. Chairman Payne reproached Republicans for idle seating and the chamber continued hashing committee changes as a 13th and later enumeration bill moved toward the Senate. Resolutions urged state, agriculture, and labor secretaries for information on sugar duties.
Philadelphia April 9 the ant hracite operators and miners failed to reach an agreement during three district conferences on wage conditions. Operators rejected miners demands and adjourned. United Mine Workers officials planned a meeting to decide next steps with no strike declared, though work could stop if operators refuse to allow mining without a deal.
Santa Barbara April 9. Stanley McCormick son of the harvester king and a longtime leader in International Harvester was declared mentally incapable of managing his affairs. His wife secured guardianship with Mrs McCormick, Dr Henry B Favill and Cyrus Bentley named as guardians. Dr G V Hamilton testified that McCormick suffers from katatonia marked by apathy lack of initiative and susceptibility to nervous excitement.
The body of Helena Modjeska, famed Polish tragedienne, died yesterday at her Bay City home and will be embalmed in Los Angeles before interment in Poland. Born Oct 12 1844 in Cracow, her 30 year stage career included a Warsaw tenure and a long American tour culminating in a late life on a California ranch near Los Angeles.
Georgia Allyn Sampson, accused of murdering her husband Harry Sampson, appears near collapse under pressure as she pleads to testify. The Lyons, New York trial resumes with defense opening after the prosecution rests and motions denied.
The steamer Admiral with the Roosevelt party aboard arrived at Port Said at 6:35 this evening after a calm three day voyage from Messina. Roosevelt and the party are well and the weather was excellent throughout the journey.
