Charles M. Carpenter, general agent for Barber Asphalt in Wisconsin, pleaded guilty to bribing three Green Bay aldermen to secure a contract. He was fined $1,000 plus costs.

New Haven Conn April 4 The declination of Senator Chauncey M Depew to stand for reelection to the Yale corporation was announced from the university secretary office today.
The New York assembly approved bills from the legislative insurance investigating committee. A register-and-reporting requirement for legislative agents was adopted along with prohibitions on rebating by life agents and rules on real estate acquisition by insurers. The measures aim to tighten recordkeeping and punish false or omitted entries and perjury.
Afedo Ti April 4 W D Hodson coroner of Mercer county and a candidate for the Republican nomination for sheriff was found dead in bed yesterday morning at his home in New Boston. His death was due to heart failure. Hodson was about 65 and long a Mercer County resident, prominent in politics and a multiple term coroner.
One thousand union workers at the Allis-Chalmers West Allis shops quit over an alleged brutal assault on John F. Harvey by five guards. Construction work halted as unions protest the incident and dispute escalates.
The Car Men union in Oakland California adopted the agreement reached the previous day with the street car company. The company recognizes the union and grants discharged employees the right to appeal before directors through the union. The current wage scale stays in effect until next January.
Vienna reports Prince William of Schaumburg Lippe died of heart failure in the morning. His daughter in law Princess Louise, Danish king’s daughter, died five hours later of meningitis.

Albany April 4 The assembly has practically killed a bill that would allow William Randolph Hearst to seek a recount of the mayoral vote in New York City. On the face of the returns George E. McClellan was elected. The bill was recommitted to the judiciary committee.
A special train carrying Richmond members of the Order of Red Men from Rushville was wrecked when a railroad fill caved in near Richmond. Six passengers were seriously injured.
Grand Rapids April 4 Mrs Martin Vanthof was burned to death early today and her husband is jailed pending a coroner’s investigation. Their 12 year old son woke to the mother’s screams and found her body on the floor amid flames while the father roamed the room in apparent dementia. Vanthor had spent time in an insane asylum.
Norfolk and Western Cannonball plows into an open Juniper siding switch fifteen miles from Norfolk W V A wrecking crew and seven doctors rushed to the scene. The train reportedly burned with casualties unknown but seven injured none seriously.
The balloon used by sculptor Paul Nocquet for a late yesterday ascent was found on the south shore of Long Island at night. Tracks around the balloon suggest the aeronaut survived the encounter yet no trace of him had been located by this afternoon as search efforts continued.
Across several coal fields on April 4 strikers confronted mine operators with clashes in Edna Pennsylvania Yatesville and Macanaqua. State troopers dispersed crowds at Yatesville while Pittsburg district mines operated with many idle pits. Officials reported no injuries and efforts to return workers to the 1903 Pittsburg scale continued.
