Atlanta April 2 Nora Bell 17 admits two husbands live and would wed a third if a suitable man could be found. She first married at 12 to Joseph Arnold, then with Edward Duncan moved to Atlanta. Her husband #1 opposed husband #2 and prompted police involvement.
Moscow reports a sensational telegram from Harbin Manchuria indicating imminent hostilities between Russian and Chinese troops. It says Chinese forces are advancing under Japanese influence and that demobilization is halted while General Grodoff, commander in chief, orders preparations for possible events.
A World telegraph reports a group of wealthy New York merchants are said to back an invasion plan to oust President Castro by 15,000 to 20,000 troops. The scheme envisions three European ships setting sail with 5,000 volunteers and large quantities of arms, ammunition, and supplies.
The Russ edition in St Petersburg is confiscated after publishing a mock Lord’s Prayer line asking to pay debts, tied to a broader labor dispute context. The changes allow the commission to decide when rate orders take effect and limit court review to whether the order exceeded authority or violated constitutional rights. The house discussed pension and naval academy matters as well.
Berlin reports a German detachment with one officer and 16 men was attacked by Hottentots on March 26 between Alkamas and the eastern frontier. Eleven Germans were killed, including an officer and ten troopers, and their wagons were burned.
In New York the Recorder instructed the April grand jury in general sessions to take up insurance matters, despite District Attorney Jerome requesting a special May grand jury for that purpose.
Spanish authorities uncover an assassination plot against King Alfonso and Infanta Maria Teresa during a royal visit to Seville province. Investigators block release of details as security measures prevent leaking specifics of the conspiracy in Lebrija.
Washington reports the United States trade with Mexico totaled 92 million dollars in fiscal 1905, up from 21 million in 1895 and 18 million in 1885. Mexico imports 53 percent from the U.S. and exports 71 percent to the U.S., with Canada the only country matching Mexico for imports from the United States and Cuba for exports to the United States. Estimates place about 1 billion dollars of U.S. capital invested in Mexico, Canada, and Cuba, roughly half in Mexico.
Chattanooga Tennessee April 2 Incen diaries yesterday tried to burn a residence of Rev Howard L Jones pastor of First Baptist church who in a sermon last Sunday denounced the lynchers of Ed Johnson in the strongest language at his command Since the sermon was delivered Dr Jones has been receiving anonymous letters almost every day telling him that something would happen to him He is now convinced that not all of these anonymous threats were idle and has secured the services of a detective who will keep watch upon his house.
In Pietermaritzburg, April 2, twelve natives condemned to death for murder of policemen during the February uprising over poll tax were shot. In London the execution announcement drew anger from Irish nationalists and liberals in the House of Commons, with a debate planned on martial law in Natal.
Mme Nordica appears at the Burtis May 3 and 4 in a large guaranteed festival by the Apollo club. The club offers 1600 to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and about 2000 has been raised from advance ticket sales. Signor Angelo Patriccio is billed for two piano numbers and praised by European critics. The Apollo club provides one program item with Nordica performing the rest.
The Hennepin Canal engineers report only 69000 of the last appropriation remains and the government will not deepen Rock River for slack water navigation east of Milan this year. Property owners along the river favor dredging over raising the dam to protect their interests. In Clinton Reverend Alexis Andreen resigns as Immanuel Lutheran pastor and plans to move to Lindstrom or North Branch Minnesota.
In Zion City, a nearly unanimous stand repudiates John Alexander Dowie. Deputy Wilbur Vollva, named in Dowie’s will, is urged to take control as supporters seek a conservator for Dowie’s estates amid a clash over church property and leadership.
Washington April 2 The Supreme Court decides Michigan railroad taxes cases against railroads over ad valorem reform and $2 million in disputed taxes. Wisconsin v Hitchcock affirms government claim to La Pointe school sections. Court also rules civil service employees may sue for damages after suspensions.
Ice dealers announce a price increase of about ten cents per hundred across all classes. Families pay 40 cents, stores and restaurants 30 cents, hotels 20 cents with an extra 25 cent charge to carry up stairs. Local cut supply is down half, wholesale costs cited as driving higher prices.
In Arkansas, Jeff Davis appears to have won 51 counties to Berry's 24 in the Democratic U S Senate race. With about 110000 total votes, Davis is near 60000 and Berry about 50000. Davis carries 1 G1 representatives and 21 state senators, possibly securing 82 of the 68 needed in a joint ballot if all legislative nominees are elected. Lincoln action bans cracker toy pistols from sale for July 4.
Pekin Bankers Tels Smith Co of Pekin Tazewell county failed to open today. A. K. Albertson was named trustee. Debts to depositors and banks exceed 400000 with assets around 250000, much of it worthless. Failure traced to large loans to Smith Wagon works and Smith Plow shops. Neither affiliated institution will be affected.
