A wide range of events and crimes are reported including robberies in Indiana, counterfeit arrests in New York, Dublin legacy bequests to musicians, a wife killing in North Carolina, and a clearinghouse formation in Sioux City. The collection notes fires, hangings, jailbreaks, drownings, and economic data from late 1880s America.
Ex congressman H Beane Mayn SMitTa died at his El mira New York home aged sixty two. Michael Kerry a leading brewer died in Chicago aged sixty. Funeral for Mrs T T Pitman known as Margery Deane held in Belmont Memorial Chapel Newport Rhode Island. Rev James B Borez president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary noted.
The obituary notices report the death of a Louisville seminary clergyman in Pau France, Eliea Browning and his Columbus Indiana-born wife within hours of each other aged eighty eight and eighty two, and Crarlo te Morean in Xenia Ohio aged one hundred seven. Also noted are the widow of Major General John M Schofield dying in Washington, Henry Fane of St Louis dying after hydro phobia from a dog bite last September.
The British steamer Storm Queen sank on the 26th in the Bay of Biscay with the captain and five others drowned. Also noted are deaths of General Louis McEtricerr in Nice at 64, a Panama Canal bondholders meeting backing Lesseps, emigration to Brazil, earthquakes in Spain and England, a Kingston hotel fire with fatalities, a Paris execution, a Messina shell burst causing casualties, a Deloraine Manitoba hanging, and jailbreak violence in Burma.
The report lists a fire destroying eleven Lafay ette square buildings in Decatur Alabama, a fatal burn to Mr Wood and serious burns to Mr Rice, a violent earthquake in Plauen Saxony, floods in Manchuria and rain in Marseilles. Other items note shipwrecks near St John New Brunswick, battles near Augusta Georgia, drownings in Columbus Ohio, and various 1888- era economic and political events from Colorado mining output to New York immigration, with an eclipse in California Nevada and a bank closure in Manhattan Kansas.

It outlines how hopeful prospector letters promise rich ore and easy profit, the sunk costs of tunneling, shafts, equipment, and houses, and the rapid collapse when rock is hard. It cites typical outlays and the rough reality of opening mines.
