A Rochester clothing ad touts low prices on overcoats including storm king and farmer’s feed coats. An extended tariff critique argues wool protection and tariffs raise consumer costs, naming Wheat Oats Beef Butter Vinegar and other items and praising protectionist policy.
State House commissioners decide to bore for natural gas on the northwest corner of the State House grounds. They estimate heat costs at ten thousand dollars annually by coal and expect gas to be cheaper, justifying the plan. Previous city gas tests failed to use this plan, which focuses on ravines or low lands as likely gas corridors. The ravine near the northwest corner is remembered by old Indianapolis residents, where the derrick will be placed.
George Stephenson, England's famed engineer, first faced perpetual motion ideas with a glass tube wheel of quicksilver that supposedly self acted yet failed. The Scientific American notes continued hopefuls lodge perpetual motion specs at the Patent Office, seen as mechanical aberration though not insanity. The item also mentions Plush Goods holiday offerings at Cary Rannells' Book Store.
Sarah Stevens nee Brown died December 8 1887 aged 19 years 3 months 18 days. Married March 10 1887 to Schuyler C Stevens. Survived by husband and family. Funeral services conducted by A. O. Raber assisted by Rev. N. L. Lord.
