Toledo Blade reports Newbern N C captured by Burnside forces with 300 Confederate prisoners. Union losses about 100 killed and 400 wounded. Army claims 46 siege guns and 3,000 stands of arms. Island No 10 reports deny capture and fight continues.
Army correspondent writes from Kentucky and Tennessee camps about spring weather, marching toward the Cumberland River, crossing on a pontoon bridge after burned bridges. He recalls Mumfordsville and Buckner’s failed bridge destruction, mentions 32nd Indiana, Texan Rangers, and Confederate deserters, with anecdotes of near disaster to an ambulance and steamboat sidews.
