In New Mexico near Albuquerque on May 7 Cuberto Gonzales witnessed a great quake whose convulsions toppled a rock and killed three sheep herders instantly. The bodies showed no wounds, death attributed to extreme fright as the region reels from the quake.
May 7 Nanaimo B C large mine disaster claims about 170 lives with 105 white and 65 Chinese workers. Friday 35 bodies recovered killed by fire damp. victims tried to shield themselves with coats. Fire nearly under control. many bodies burned beyond recognition. Forty seven widows and numerous orphans, relief appeals organized as contributions pour in.
Reports confirm a sweeping wind storm across thirteen counties of the upper peninsula. Millions of feet of pine were destroyed, numerous buildings damaged, and several towns left unroofed. Three fatalities and many injuries reported. damages estimated at about $100,000.
A Friday morning blaze in Jo Davies County Warren Illinois destroyed property valued at 25 000 dollars. The post office and several businesses owned by L. E. Morris Rohr and Evans William Spofford and William Phillips were consumed. The mail was saved and insurance coverage was 10 000 dollars.
A powerful storm Friday morning struck Randolph four buildings were burned by lightning. Livestock including several horses perished. Fruit and forest suffered significant damage to trees in the area.
Springfield May 7 The house debated a county option temperance bill for three hours and defeated a filibuster motion to suspend rules. The teaching of alcohol effects in public schools was debated and amended to take effect July 1 1889 with a disqualification clause for teachers. The body adjourned with no quorum on the amendment and plans to reconvene Monday. The Senate passed a savings banks organization bill and a bill authorizing governor appointed election commissioners in Cook County with ballots to be kept six months.
Success of the National Opera arene at Frisco San Francisco on May 7 leads to expansion plans. The management reports record attendance and favorable reception prompting budget considerations for broader tours and future seasons.
Queen Kapiolani of Hawaii and a royal party toured Mount Vernon and the tomb of Washington with Senators Sherman and Evarts aboard the Despatch. In Tiffin Ohio on May 7 the jury found J H McWilliams guilty of uttering forged checks and Judge Pendleton sentenced him to five years. The Gaines murder case involving a blind man was overruled for a new trial and Gaines received life in the state penitentiary.
G Dunn Co reports a week of strong western trade with inter state activity lifting confidence in many towns. Gains in Cincinnati St Louis Chicago St Paul and other cities accompany robust building and land markets, while eastern trade lags and capital flows westward fueling speculation and expansion.
Laughlin's Bradford coke works employees faced 10 percent advance offers to draw coke amid a brewing strike. Secretary Mullin urged rejection and predicted success while strikers may be served notices to vacate company houses at Frick and Co for stoppages. East Leisenring workers were ordered to quit as the company funded a new church project.
Mount Carmel Pa May 7 Congress man Scott reports a large Pennsylvania colliery closed indefinitely Friday. Morris Ridge Colliery also shut for extensive repairs. The suspensions are seen as a prelude to a planned miners strike May 10, with operators refusing a 10 percent wage increase.
Two Irish pugilists Cain and McGuire spar for nearly two hours at the Bessemer works ring. Cain wins after fifty two rounds securing a purse of $15 amid heavy punishing exchanges. Peté Nolan of Cincinnati seeks a bout with Kilrain after failing to arrange a match with Mitchell.

Dr. Carver of Kansas City and W. G. Graham of England began a pigeon shooting match in Newark New Jersey. On Thursday Graham killed 92 birds and Carver 83. On Friday Carver added 86 and Graham 85.
In New Haven a wealthy southern merchant and his bookkeeper settled a $646000 debt of honor. The partner, fearing confiscation, moved north and later entrusted Judge L B Morris to oversee repayment. The bookkeeper made full restitution over six years, concluding last week. Names withheld. parties believed to be a New Haven millionaire and a southern banker.
James Laswell of Laswell Indiana fired on Charles B. Greciius on a train platform in Evansville. Greciius fled across a creek and into woods after Laswell pursued him alone, seeking an interview over Greciius eloping with Laswell’s daughter.
Judge Morris holds federal law controls inspection of steamers from Maryland oyster navy on Chesapeake Bay. State vessels deemed subject to federal regulation and seized if needed. Maryland fined 3000 dollars for the violation.
In Carcaco on May 7, Alexander Sullivan urged that all local juries since 1883 may be illegal. He argued the state's attorney would appeal to the supreme court to set aside the verdicts against seven men condemned, claiming the jurors were improperly chosen. The court reserved decision until Monday.
