The Marquette Regional Health Authority outlines a Satellite Community Cancer Program for the Hamiota District Health Centre noting higher cancer incidence in Marquette than the Manitoba average. In 1998, 42 new chemotherapy patients were diagnosed in the area with satellites also planned for Russell and a full program in Neepawa.

A lethal white foal born July 13 to a mare owned by Donna and Wayne Abbess of Togo has survived past two months. Donna notes the rarity, saying she has heard of one similar case in BC but none beyond birth. Lethal whites carry a genetic defect affecting the intestines, making survival uncommon.
