Goose Lake student chosen for Manitoba ALIVE symposium
Grade 12 student Shane Vander Meer from Goose Lake High was selected to attend the seventh annual Manitoba ALIVE symposium held over the weekend. He and Wendy Leslar were nominated by teacher Dave Mack as credible candidates. The event trains youth in volunteer leadership through project management and leadership skills.

CIBC to close Russell Banner branch in 2000
The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce will close its Russell Main Street branch on March 17 2000 and merge with the Dauphin branch. Declining visits and clients banking elsewhere led to the decision. Kevin Lightfoot states staff and community were notified six months ahead to arrange alternatives.

Late harvest lags as crops stay green in Shoal Lake area
Farmers report a slow start to harvest with crops still green due to late sowing, persistent rainfall, and absence of heat. By this time last year most fields were finished, but this season has seen little progress beyond fall rye and winter wheat and a few early seeded acres.
Madge Lake triathlon draws 29 participants including local educator
The Madge Lake event over Labour Day weekend attracted 29 finishers. Among them was a Kamsack teacher and former resident who will represent Canada at the World Triathlon Championships, with Winnipeg’s Phillipe Chabot completing the Olympic distance in 2 hours 14 minutes 59 seconds. The Duck Mountain Triathlon began in 1986, paused briefly, and resumed three years ago.

Clerk Wounded in Hotel Robbery Attempt
An elderly hotel clerk in Dauphin was shot during a robbery attempt at Towers Hotel. Two masked men entered the lobby before 3 a.m. on September 12, demanded money, and fled after the gun discharged in a struggle. The clerk is in stable condition at Dauphin Regional Health Centre.

Grandview Promotions Discontinues Dental Services
At a Sept. 7 Grandview Promotions meeting, it was disclosed the dental services sponsored by the group have ended. Equipment bought to sustain the service will be disposed of, with a Dauphin dental office showing interest in purchasing it. The failure stemmed from lack of support rather than Grandview Promotions effort or investment.
