Economic changes after the war will shape small towns and their future. Returning soldiers and war industry workers from rural communities face must rejoin farm and town life. The town and surrounding farm must cooperate to sustain workers, markets, services, education, and social structure, ensuring towns remain attractive to recruits and residents.
Four Manitoba highways slated as postwar feeders to the Alaska highway will need 200 miles of paving to become usable routes. Minister Erwick F. Wills announced at Regina that Manitoba will seek federal aid to complete Nos. 14, 16, the Trans-Canada stretch Brandon to the Saskatchewan boundary, the Ever-Breen route, and No. 10 to Clear Lake. Each prairie province will pick its feeder routes and request Ottawa funding.
The first meeting of the Home and School Association will be held on Monday, Sept., 20 at p.m. in the school auditorium. Features include introducing new teaching staff, a parent talk on what a parent expects of the school, and a teacher talk on what the home may expect of the teacher, followed by a social hour and tea.
A wartime diary style note from a service member describes routine medical checks, discharge in pocket, and differences between army life and civilian life. He reflects on training, appetite, and camaraderie with fellow soldiers from across the dominion during a seven month sojourn. He ends with a farewell salute to friends and a hopeful return home.
The Postmaster General urges Canadians to mail Christmas parcels early for overseas service members. To ensure timely delivery before Christmas Day, mail should be sent not later than November 1st, an advance of ten days from last year. Earlier mailing is advised for recipients in distant locations and Mediterranean theatres.

Mrs Geo Stuart of Norway visits Mrs E M Olson. Edna McGregor of Ottawa visits her parents. Marion Ruff returns to Winnipeg after visiting relatives in Togo. The Togo United Ladies Aid offers tea in Craig s store on Sept 18 serving sandwiches and pie.
Dauphin visitors Mr and Mrs T Roberts and Kamsack guests Mrs P Busch and Mrs L Lester are mentioned. The Ladies Aid met at Mrs Alex Taylors home. Dick Herbert worked on granaries for Wm Poutd at Makaroff. Bella Sutherland visits her parents Mr and Mrs Robt Sutherland. A singing evangelist from Yorkton will lead a service at Deepdale Community Hall on Sunday September 19 at 2 30 PM.
Russell residents Mr. and Mrs. J A Burges and others visited friends this week. Agnes Jakeman from Vancouver’s St Pauls Hospital visits her parents. Harold Hess promoted to L Cpl with the R C E in England. Sgt Richard Bogle returns to Winnipeg after five days leave at home.
Mrs E Cryderman and Mrs McMurray hosted a post visit in Grand Narrows while local threshermen expect to begin season work by week’s end if weather cooperates. A weather delay on September 7 halted the planned women’s quilting at Mrs Wilson’s. the group now reschedules for September 17 along with the monthly meeting.
Pte Lucien Brazeau of the Winnipeg Grenadiers writes from a Japanese POW camp dated June 6 1942 noting good health and daily activities including sports a library and weather in the camp. He asks after family and mentions a recent bean supper event hosted by Cromarty W I at Roblin Bakery on Sept 18.
Mrs Kelly Cockerill returns from Dauphin after visiting relatives. Elza Prior is very ill, with many friends wishing him a speedy recovery. Local outfits operating include Cockerill, Ler Curle, Alemetsky, Proski, and Savanenchuk. A combined Ukrainian and English service will be held next Sunday at the church.
John Pearson sits threshing in the district while Ina Lindsay visits Makaroff with her parents. The Patriotic Society meets September 27. Percy Rose and Mrs Rose of Famsack visit Mr and Mrs Lawrence Maguire. Wm Sangster and wife return after two weeks with relatives. A dance is planned in Silverwood September 24 with lunch and half proceeds to the Rest Room in Roblin.
