The Roblin Kinsmen Club opens a new season with President J Layng and officers. They maintain Goose Lake park with a concrete paddling pool and town water supply. Plans include landscaping benches and playground gear while aiding Roblin minor hockey this winter. Financial summary through Aug 31 1967 shows assets 908.75 liabilities 315.50 equity 593.25 receipts total 1826.59 expenses 1233.68 resulting in surplus 592.90 and cash on hand 252.00.
A column offering home tips to ease oven cleaning with small tricks. Use low heat for broiling, place foil under pans to catch drips, and pre heat foam sprays to 200 degrees F before wiping. Cautions include avoiding foam contact with non enamel surfaces and handling electrical appliance care pamphlets.
Shell River Council held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday October 3rd at 1 30 pm with Reeve F H Wilson presiding and all councillors present. The September minutes were adopted along with accounts totaling 28042 69 and cheque issuance. Aid of 12 00 on Hudzinski case approved. Soldier Tax Relief for W G Clement approved. Road spraying grant to Weed Control Division discussed. Taxes for 1967 and 1987 buildings reviewed for cancellation or remission. Regional Development meeting planned for October 23 1967 in Duphin. Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday November 1st after the Court of Revision.
Snow fell Tuesday morning enough to cover ground but vanished by noon as warmer conditions returned. The brief snowfall left patchy wet spots and little accumulation for residents.
The Redeemer Lutheran Church in Winnipeg hosted the September 16 1987 wedding of Lenore McBean and Wilfred Weir officiated by Reverend Pollack at 2:00 p.m. The bride wore a floor length nylon gown with a silk illusion veil and a rosette headpiece. The ceremony included bridesmaid Eve Laplante and ring bearer Garth LaPlante. A buffet reception for about sixty followed at Odd Fellows Hall. The couple plans a short honeymoon in the United States and reside in Winnipeg.
Mr and Mrs Peter Nowoasad grew English Telegraph Cucumbers four plants yielded all they needed plus extras for neighbors. A red potato weighed 3½ lbs from W Gamey garden. A jumbo carrot and king size turnips 16 lbs were also reported. the Clement household joked about splitting a turnip for supper.
About two hundred Roblin residents gathered October 18 in Roblin Collegiate auditorium for a Centennial Banquet honoring seniors. Mayors and reeves presented the Order of the Crocus to attendees over 74, while local organizations provided catering and entertainment from Roblin Collegiate Glee Choir and community groups. New Centennial Grounds entries and fencing were noted as part of the evening.
Mrs O Kendrick returns home after three weeks as a patient at Winnipeg General Hospital. Grand Forks guests Ernie and family visit J A Hilland parents. Allanson 40th anniversary celebrated at Portage la Prairie. Numerous families attend Expo trips, travels to England Europe and Nova Scotia. Ramsey Malashewski wedding in North Battleford and many Winnipeg and Brandon visitors. Royal Bank convention in Winnipeg with Lou Cook and family. Twins Gordon and Ronald travel with them to Franklin while staying with relatives.
Harold Boughton reports on night travels through rural districts showing how land clearing and road building have removed native poplar belts. He urges a protective tree belt plan and a tree order for early spring planting to reduce wind exposure and preserve sight lines.
Peter Juba reports damage to several windows at Roblin Collegiate found late Sunday or early Monday when beer bottles were thrown at them. Estimated damage awaits assessment as police narrow suspects to four with no arrests yet.
Dr George Friesen weed specialist at the University of Manitoba warns that Avadex and Avadex BW are in critically low supply due to unavailable raw materials. Manufacturers face a 46 month lag. supply may not meet demand until fall 1968. Farmers used record quantities this year and must adjust application on hard or dry soils to ensure incorporation before spring.
Manitoba's minister of mines and natural resources Hon Gurney Evans congratulates the people for their cooperative response to woodlands closures. He notes restrictions were a last resort after a very dry year and that cooperation helped save many acres of Manitoba forests despite 634 forest fires across the province.
The Manitoba Telephone System will release the Provincial Telephone Directory in early November. Local delivery will reach charger centres while other areas receive by mail. The 686 page directory adds 16 pages over 1966 and prints 167000 copies, 2000 more than last year. Brandon numbers take effect December 10 with the new exchange. prior calls use the 1966 list. The cover shows a grain field ready for harvest photographed near Brandon, about 25 miles southwest of Winnipeg.
