The Bear Claw area adds a quad chair lift and four new runs while expanding snowmaking and a snow carpet on the bunny hill to aid beginners. Pulo notes 98,000 visits last year and 100,000 expected this season with a tentative opening December 8 to 10.
The Shoal Lake Kids' Club marked its official opening on September 21 with about 100 attendees. The multi use daycare facility had opened in stages, an open house in January and a February business launch, overcoming delays to become a community fixture.
On September 23 in Brandon the Boissevain community won the International Challenge in the Communities in Bloom competition in the small category. Boissevain topped Dyce Scotland Heysham Village England Olds Alberta Municipality of Kincardine Ontario and Souris for the honour.
Five blooms awarded at the national Communities in Bloom ceremony in Brandon where GP Grandview Exponent-Gilbert Plains compete for the first time under mentor Dauphin. Judges praised Millennium Park beautification efforts and the community’s work.
Russell captured the national Communities in Bloom title in the 1 001 to 2 000 population group defeating Watson Lake Yukon Preeceville Saskatchewan Calmar Alberta and Kipling Saskatchewan. It marks five years of provincial CIB involvement for Russell and its first national bid.
War brides of Souris were honoured at the Royal Canadian Legion War Brides Tea held Sept. 20. Two of the area's five remaining war brides, Kay Wagner and Pat Johnson, were in attendance. Kay Pearce, Sylvia Couvier and Audrey Wood, all Souris PCH residents, could not attend.
A large blaze on a local Swan River farm consumed about 9000 bales, drawing both fire and police crews for over two hours. The incident is deemed suspicious and under investigation. Police urge tips via Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222 8477.
The board of the Duck Mountain Ski Hill expresses optimism this winter. Summer improvements are complete and a bold membership drive is underway. Manager Don Finnie has started booking school groups to boost attendance and revenue.
Elaine MacDonald of Dauphin plans a yellow ribbon drive to aid Canadian soldiers. She will sell magnets bearing Support our Troops and display large cardboard ribbons for windows and yards.
