Limited access roads designate 1300 miles in Manitoba

The Highway Traffic and Coordination Board designates 1300 miles of provincial trunk highways as limited access to curb crashes and guide development. Controlled 125 foot areas flank these highways with 254 foot zones near future expansions. Owners near No 4 No 10 No 83 and other routes urged to verify limits by writing to the Board.

Public Speaking Contest Held by Manitoba Credit Unions

On Friday November 2 at Roblin Elementary Auditorium the Credit Unions of District No 6 staged their first Public Speaking Contest titled Young Folks Night Contestants from Swan River Roblin and Dauphin competed in Junior Grades 7 8 9 and Senior Grades 10 11 12 Keith Watson of Swan River won the Junior Group while Carol Hocaday of Swan River topped the Senior Group George Roy of Spruce Creek Dauphin took second Adjudicators were Mrs K Everall Mrs K Burelle and Mr N Samerko Provincial Director R H Thomlinson presented awards commended the speakers and thanked the choir conductor Peter Calvert The meeting ended with The Queen and coffee and doughnuts served by Roblin Credit Union ladies.

Collegiate magazine sales prove highly profitable again

Roblin Collegiate students ran a two week magazine subscription drive with Irene Belcher as General Manager and Trudy Mann as secretary. Prizes were awarded to top sellers. Lynn Bakken won first in the Grandview public speaking contest and district finals, with provincial finals upcoming. A Get Acquainted party featured dancing, contests, and refreshments. Betty Rawlings is noted among participants.

Premier Duff Roblin Calls December 14 Provincial Election

Premier Duff Roblin announced on Friday November 9 that Manitoba will hold a December 14 general provincial election to seek public judgment on past policies and opinions on new development plans. He stressed full employment in a free society and broader economic foundations through government industry labour and agriculture cooperation. Dissolution of the 26th Legislature was approved, writs issued, with nomination day set for November 30 at 1 pm. At dissolution the House stood PC 34 Liberal 10 NDP 9 Social Credit 1 and 3 vacancies.

Obituary of Mrs Eulalie Ballard in Flin Flon

The funeral for Mrs Eulalie Ballard who died October 27 in Flin Flon General Hospital was held October 30 at 2 pm in the Salvation Army Citadel with Lieut Wm Hanson officiating. Born March 23 1898 she was 64. Survived by husband Watson Ballard, daughters Al Abar June Grant and Yvonne Smith, sister Blanche Ford, brothers Jim Adair Morley Adair, son Lloyd predeceased in 1952. Interment in Hillside cemetery.

Free Methodist Church at Grandview Dedicated

The Free Methodist Churches of Roblin Bield and Silverwood attended the Grandview dedication Sunday November 11 at 2 30 p m. Bishop Kendall led the service with Rev J L Walrath Rev Flesher Res Bygsdin G Chalmers and Rev Caswell on the platform. The new church on Gilbert Plains road seats about 125 and includes a full basement with Sunday School rooms and auditorium.

Roblin Parkland Music Festival Planned for 1963

An organizational meeting discussed a Roblin spring music festival. A slate of officers was proposed, a three-member executive set, and committees formed for music, spoken poetry, choral speech, and folk dancing. Festival dates set for May 16 and 17, 1963 with entries due by April 1.

International Peace Garden at Manitoba North Dakota Border

The International Peace Garden spans over 2000 acres in Manitoba and North Dakota, founded by Dr Henry J Moore. Since its July 14 1932 cairn dedication, the garden has grown with terraces lakes picnic grounds and formal gardens on Turtle Mountain near the No 10 highway border crossing.
