A Dauphin Presbytery W M S rally held at Grandview United Church on Friday November 7 featured 19 attendees with 64 from C.G.L.T. groups across Dauphin Grandview Roblin and Gilbert Plains. Mrs J C Parker Roblin gave the lesson on Lessons Learned in a Christian Home and CGIT and auxiliary leaders spoke on citizenship and training while a Wicklow-Morranville skit and African Hymn marked the event. A box lunch and sing song closed the day with greetings from church members.
The November Ladies Aid meeting of the United Church met at Mrs M McFadyen's home with 22 members and 2 visitors. Mrs Parker reported from the Dauphin Presbytery Women's Association after scripture led by Mrs Leavens and prayers by Mrs Martin. A dainty lunch followed. Next meeting at Mrs A Maple’s home with Mrs Jory and Rel Goodbun on lunch duty.
Roblin celebrates Deputy Speaker Ronald Robertson's nomination to the Ministry of Agriculture. Premier Campbell announced the cabinet change after Robertson, a five year RC AF veteran, helped bomb Sfax Tunisia. Robertson, first elected 1945 at age 25, later served as Deputy Speaker and has a large family.
Goose Lake Consolidated School trustees met November 6 in the public school. They approved last meeting minutes, approved bills totaling $157.20 to Currie Co. and others, and discussed staff vacancy and other repairs. A key action: no one may enter school grounds during school hours except on legitimate business, and disorderly conduct will be prosecuted. Winter bus route tenders were accepted, with specific daily rates and bondsmen listed. The meeting adjourned after routine business.
A Liberal Organization Committee gathered on November 5 and praised R. D. Robertson as new Minister of Agriculture and Immigration. They scheduled a delegate nominating convention for November 19 at 8 pm in the school auditorium, with a public meeting at 9 pm. Officers named include President James Stewart and Vice President J R Mitchell along with Sec Treas A C Hamilton and several executors.
Manitoba Telephone System begins distributing a new Provincial Telephone Directory for 1953. About 53 000 copies are available from 64 000 printed, with 216 alphabetical pages up from 200 and roughly 4 000 extra listings. Classified pages rise from 100 to 112. Subscribers may collect at local telephone offices.
Roblin Hospital Aid held its regular meeting on Tuesday November 4 with 21 members present led by President Mrs. 8 Inglis who urged cooperation and support. Committees formed include Social Sewing Mend ing with delegates named and Mrs. DeLaMare chosen as delegate to the Regional Hospital Board meeting in Dauphin on November 6 and a forthcoming Hospital Aid dance scheduled for November 21 at the Memorial Hall.
Deepdale W II held its annual meeting at Mrs. Philip Beerman home with 25 members and two visitors. They sent one CARE parcel of baby food to Japan and named delegates to the 1953 conventions. Mrs. Fred Ward and Mrs. P Beerman to district convention at Binscarth May 14. Mrs. Jack Beerman to provincial convention at Winnipeg June 8-12. Officers elected for 1952 53 include President Mrs J Stinson and several vice presidents and secretaries. Next meeting noted with Christmas gathering at Mrs J Stinson’s December 17.
The interprovincial 1952 National Barley Contest will name its champion February 19 from a record number of top entries since 1946. Alberta and Manitoba entries total 1,003 with 581 from Alberta and 512 from Manitoba. Manitoba judging runs February 6 and 7 in Winnipeg. shipments reached 240 carloads by November 5 and more are expected before the final judging.
Editorial argues two bumper crops in one year worsened cattle dispersal and market glut. June 1952 Canadian livestock reached about nine million, now under seven million due to unsold grain and die offs. Calls for government aid, proposing eighty percent grain value advances with grain collateral to revive farms and prevent loss of land and independence.
The Canadian Save the Children Fund reports 87,620.41 spent on relief over ten months providing money for food clothing blankets shoes and medicine to needy children overseas and in Canada. Toy donations rose through White Gift Day campaigns in churches and shipments included 21 700 lbs of powdered milk to Austria Italy Middle East and Pakistan. More than 4 000 went to a Home for War Mutilated Boys in Erba Italy. The fund seeks further money and usable clothing at Civic Auditorium Winnipeg Manitoba.
