Changes to Unemployment Insurance Act Passes Imminently

The federal government plans changes to the Unemployment Insurance Act with expected passage this month. The reforms affect benefit duration and calculation, increase the minimum work weeks, adjust the Dependency Benefit rate, modify misconduct and voluntary quit provisions, and reduce the 1995 1996 UI premium rate. Most claims started after April 3 will see shorter benefit periods, with some exceptions for long earnings, and the changes apply to regular UI claims only.
