Parliament Hill debates foreign policy unity and UN role

The House of Commons heard a lengthy statement by Louis St Laurent on Canada's external affairs amid U N tensions. Opposition leaders Hackett and Coldwell urged stronger armed readiness and highlighted a third force of Britain and the Commonwealth resisting both superpowers.

Local Delegates Head to Legion Convention in Saskatoon

Veterans from across Canada travel to Saskatoon for the Dominion Convention of the Canadian Legion May 23 to 27. Accredited Roblin delegate Robert McBride and alternate J A Robertson, with wives, will attend. Over 1500 delegates expected to discuss pensions, housing, employment, communism, defence, and immigration. Governor General Viscount Alexander to open the event with British and Canadian Legion officials in attendance.

Roblin Hospital District No 2 forms first Governing Board

Dr E R Rafuse attended the Roblin Hospital District No 2 meeting in the Shell River Municipal office Roblin on Friday May 14 1948. The organizing committee was dissolved and the first Governing Board appointed with representatives named for Roblin Shell River Shellmouth and Consul. Elected officers included Chairman Henry Jaasund Vice-Chairman M A Clarke and Secretary Treasurer Mrs H H Simpson.

Hood Sunk by Bismarck in Greenland Engagement

On May 24 1941 the British battle cruiser Hood sank off Greenland after a decisive hit set off its magazines. The near-impossible hunt saw ships like King George V Rodney Ramillies Renown and Ark Royal pursue the Bismarck. By May 27 the Rodney and King George V closed in and greater fire disabled the Bismarck.

Two Contests For Barley Growers

Western division of the 1948 National Barley Contest sponsored by the Brewing and Malting industry aims to boost Canadian Malting Barley quality. Two competitions: Farmer's Competition for one carload of malt barley and Seed Grower's Competition for at least 500 bushels of certified seed. Provincial regional prizes and entry forms distributed to barley areas in western provinces.
