Fires Fueled by Carelessness in Dry Manitoba Spring
Dry spring weather and human carelessness trigger a record number of early fires across Manitoba forests and grasslands. By mid season, about 90 fires have burned thousands of acres aided by equipment including water bombers, helicopters, bulldozers, muskeg tractors, and pumps. The Lac du Bonnet northeast blaze alone burned over 10 000 acres for nearly two weeks. Firefighting costs exceeded 2000 dollars daily, with nests of habitat disrupted and travel restricted briefly. Officials urge simple rules to prevent losses: extinguish all embers and lights, fully extinguish campfires, avoid burning debris without precautions, and discard glass or gas containers that can magnify flames.
