Rambles of Reggies and Various Canadian Notes

A rambling column covers bank robbery in Winnipeg, quotes on politics from Pierre Trudeau and other figures, and satirical notes on government, sports, and street life. It notes tax talk by Premier Ross Thatcher, university student protests, and Red River area topics from St Regis Coffee Bar to Ottawa. It ends with hatchery data on lake trout and trout production and planting.

Wild Oats Control Boosts Wheat Yields in Manitoba Trial

In Brandon Manitoba on April 8, 1968 Trillate Avadex BW was harrowed into cultivated stubble land in fall or spring following seeding. Researcher R D Dryden reports herbicide rates of 1.0 1.5 and 2.0 lb per acre raised wheat yields by 26 30 and 27 percent with 80 98 percent wild oats suppression. Trace Minerals Now In Salt

Trace minerals such as copper, iron and cobalt are essential to healthy productive animals says Cam Brown at The University of Manitoba. Trace mineralized salt is available loose or in block form and a major salt producer offers organic iodide variant to control foot rot.

Farm advised mineral mix candidates for livestock

Mr Brown suggests a complete mineral mix on the farm using 100 pounds of trace mineralized salt paired with either 100 pounds of dicalcium phosphate rock phosphate or bone meal. Free choice feeding makes any option economical for most livestock classes. Trace-mineralized salt unnecessary where trace minerals are already in the feed. Mills plan to stock traces mineralized salt with costs from 2.25 to 2.50 per hundredweight.

Angling Regulations Expand Trout Catch At Ontario Waters

The Fiseies Branch announces spring stocking and a higher daily limit for brook rainbow and splake trout. About 1868 licences go on sale April 1 with opening days on May 18 south of the 53rd parallel and May 25 north of it. Designated trout waters have no closed season to protect spawning.

One Line Rule Promises Equal Share in Fishing

A new guideline warns anglers that each person must use a single line and obtain an angling license. It condemns multi line and snagging practices and urges fair access to a half million dollar resource with a one man one rod approach.

Wheatgrass Outperforms Brome In Alfalfa Pastures

Manitoba agronomist Marcel Barnabe reports intermediate wheatgrass with alfalfa yields 10 20 percent more than brome alfalfa mixtures. Wheatgrass establishes quickly, recovers well after grazing, stays green in late summer, and adds soil fiber. It is less drought tolerant and can winter kill after dry falls. The Chief variety is winter hardy with solid forage and seed yields. An adequate seed supply is available in the province.
