Manitoba budget set for March 23 session restart
Finance Minister Rosanne Wowchuk announced the 2010 provincial budget will be introduced March 23 as the fourth session of the 39th Manitoba legislature resumes. The third quarter report shows a $555 million shortfall for 2009 10, down from $592 million forecast, with revenue declines from corporate taxes and federal flows, plus Hydro profits down $136 million. The province faced $90 million in H1N1 planning costs and $146 million for the 2009 spring flood, to be excluded from the balanced budget calculation. Wowchuk said spending will be managed during tough times. The report notes Manitoba’s economy is outperforming the Canadian average.
