CN investigators probe a derailment of boxcars on a spur to a gravel pit near Bield. The cars bent rails and displaced earth, yet residents saw nothing suspicious and CN official Bob Matluck says motive or cause remains undetermined as of Friday.
A Sunday night fire at John Isaac’s farm on Highway No. 5 near the Bield corner destroyed an old barn and a farrowing barn. The Roblin Fire Department pumped 139,000 gallons from a dugout to contain the blaze, with lightning cited as the cause. Isaac reported the loss of 150 hogs and said rebuilding would begin. A severe thunderstorm accompanied the incident.
Roblin resident Ed Myshchuk awoke to two smashed maple trees after a weekend cold front brushed through the area. Meteorologist Ray Clyde noted winds gusting to 60 kph plus and 57 mm of rain fell as Roblin faced a brisk storm Tuesday morning.
Education Minister Len Derkach announced Dave McGill of Roblin as special assistant to his office. McGill, a College teacher of English and physical education, will start Tuesday. The temporary summer posting may become permanent if successful.
