Debate on Budget Ends as Amendments Defeated in Commons

Parliament Hill debate over the Budget lasted about a week as discontent with Government proposals appeared on both sides. The first amendment urged higher income tax exemptions, reduced sales and excise taxes for low income earners, and a public investment board. It was defeated after all CCF and Social Credit proponents backed it while Liberals and Conservatives opposed. The next motion by Mr. Macdonald, a straight non-confidence vote, was also defeated. By-elections and a Fraser River flood emergency dominated floor time, with bipartisan sympathy and calls for aid. O. L. Jones of Kelowna won Yale BC in a Liberal Conservative upset, a major setback for the Progressive Conservative Party.
