W. Roger Worth argues taxpayers fund MPs earning over 60 000 a year plus a 1 million dollar pension for 15 years service. He questions whether this leadership justifies the compensation as Parliament winds down for the summer recess.
The Liberal and other parties face stalled legislation as federal candidates accelerate campaign plans. Brian White, PC candidate for Dauphin Swan River, opened Roblin headquarters on 1st Avenue N W with staff Allison Shearer Jim Mickelson and campaign manager Joe Newtansky. The office will be staffed daily 9 30 to 4 30 and visit locals weekly.
Municipal Affairs Minister Andy Anstett announced 30.7 million dollars in provincial tax sharing payments will be mailed late this month. The per capita distribution is 25.85 to organized municipalities and 25.85 to unorganized territory, with urban supplements of 4.25 or 5.95 per capita by city size. Payments use 1981 census data and reflect higher urban costs. Local totals include Shell River RM 30011.85 and Roblin Town 58785.30.
Manitoba Health Minister Larry Desjardins announced a public information campaign to curb exposure to mosquitoes amid above average rainfall and warm weather. The plan includes radio and newspaper notices and guidance on repellents screens clothing and eliminating standing water. A revised surveillance system assigns an entomologist veterinarian virologist and meteorologist to monitor risks and report to the department.
At a Roblin meeting Walter Arndt of the Roblin Agricultural Society opposed the Curling Club proposal citing cramped grounds and drainage concerns. The Society suggested a site north of the swimming pool, but that area is leased to Goose Lake High School and under pressure from Intermountain School Division. Local councils indicated no opposition to any location, while school use and leases create friction.
