Canada’s 1962 economy steadies amid crisis and reform

In 1962 Canada faced a domestic crisis tied to international balance of payments but government actions restored confidence. Measures included cancelling a 400 million standby credit line with Export-Import Bank, a 250 million bond issue in New York, phased tariff removals, and Bank of Canada rate cuts from 6 to 4 percent. Gold and foreign exchange reserves remained strong as repayments to IMF proceeded, while temporary surcharges lingered. The economy showed growth, exports and a trade surplus, with high employment and rising manufacturing. New legislation to ease transport costs, reform civil service costs, and an expanded program for technical and vocational training aims to reduce unemployment and boost industry.

Canada to push tax cuts and industry shifts for jobs

The discussion outlines tax concessions to boost research in Canada and a labour measure to aid adaptation to automation. It notes unemployment remains high despite growth, a large balance of payments deficit of about a billion dollars, and a aim to earn more abroad to fund imports. The goal is more jobs, higher profits, lower deficits, and reduced foreign capital reliance.
