Thirty-Third Bon Spiel Opens In Roblin

Roblin hosts the thirty third annual Bon Spiel with six events and prize lists valued over $2,000. Mayor William Ford opens the event with club officials as crowds anticipate keen play despite cold minus 32 conditions. Banquet and dance follow at the memorial hall while prizes are showcased at Mitchell's drug store.

Knox United SS Holds Annual Meeting and Elections

The Knox United Sunday school held its annual meeting on January 13 appointing Mrs. J C Parker as superintendent and A T Kines as assistant superintendent. Miss A T Arnott became secretary treasurer with Wm Keast and Brian Kelso as assistants. The program funded visual education for the Jr congregation, and Birthday Bowl proceeds supported Primary and Beginners supplies and Korean Relief. Gifts were sent to the Carlyle Indian school twice during the year.

Mrs Wilf Ward Hosts Shell River W I Meeting

The Shell River Women s Institute met at Mrs Will Ward s home with Mrs Nash presiding. After business a social contest winner was Mrs Limb. A dainty lunch followed. The next meeting will be at Mrs Carl Andres home. All visitors welcome.

Local Knox United Church Holds Annual Meeting

Knox United Church conducted its annual congregational meeting in the basement hall on January 18 led by Dr. J. Carlyle Parker with E. A. Waters as secretary. Reports praised a strong year in work and finances including a $535 bank surplus after obligations and new projects like a Tyro group, lighting upgrade, and basement redecoration.

Deepdale United Church Annual Meeting Held

The Deepdale United Church annual meeting on January 16 was chaired by Dr J Car lyle Parker with Horace Ayer as secretary. The financial report showed all obligations met with a year end balance. Mrs T Roberts reported the W A raised 311 for church purposes. The congregation agreed to a member canvas and adopt a duplex envelope system. Session and Board of Managers continued in 1952.

Tumm er United Church Congregational Meeting Recap

Tummeil United Church held a nonpaual congregational meeting on January 17 with Dr J Carlyle Parker as chairman and D McArthur as secretary. The Board of Managers reported all financial obligations met and a $491 bank balance. Miss Katherine Lamb presented the W A report showing $268 raised and donations to church funds, the WMS.

Increased Education Aid Forecast For Manitoba Schools

Premier Campbell told Manitoba Urban Association delegates that the next session will see increased financial assistance for education. Details on amounts and distribution await the Legislature meeting, with the committee fully endorsing the move though some members would push further.

Shell River Elect Officers For 1952

The Roblin Manitoba area council meeting on January 2 1952 saw newly elected Reeve Clarke and Councillors Boyce and Edel sworn in. The session approved December 1951 minutes and December payments totaling 7427.67, appointed Boyce deputy reeve, formed finance and public works committees, arranged banking with Royal Bank, and passed bylaws appointing officers assessors and health solicitor. Reeve Clarke and T. L. Dillin reappointed to Roblin District Hospital Board for three years as next meeting set for February 5.

The Evening Guild of Knox United church held its January meeting at the home of Mrs. C. H. Sorbo and elected officers for 1952. President Mrs. L. Stevenson, Vice-President Mrs. E. A. Waters, Secretary Mrs. Wm. Ford, Treasurer Mrs. Wm. Cross, Membership Committee Mrs. J. Thom and Mrs. J. C. Parker. The guild will lead the Junior Congregation at regular church services.

Roblin Film Council Elects Officers for 1952

The Roblin Film Council held its officer election January 22 in Knox United church basement. J. R. Mitchell was re elected president with A Sangster as vice president Dr J Carlyle Parker sec treas and executive members A Ritchie Mrs I L Leavens and W R Scott. R G Ward was elected custodian and librarian. Eighteen member organizations subscribe to the council. The sustaining membership fee was raised to $2 to cover projector depreciation and repairs. Films Cultivation and Hot Ice were shown by J R Mitchell.

Howard McClarty Passes at Swan River

Funeral services were held for Howard John McClarty 59 at Knox United church in Swan River after he died January 9. Dr J Carlyle Parker led the service with organist Mrs A T Kines. pallbearers included John Adam and others. Interment followed in Roblin cemetery. Survived by wife and two sons Gordon and William. another son Ted was killed in World War II.

Lorne Brydon 41 Dies Sudden in Oliver B C

Lorne Hamilton Brydon died suddenly January 4 at his Oliver British Columbia home. A WWII veteran born in Roblin Manitoba he worked in construction and on the Osoyoos Customs building. He married Mary Hyson less than two years ago and is survived by his wife father Andrew Brydon five brothers and extended family. The funeral conducted by Rev G T Pattison with Canadian Legion Branch 97 was held January 7 at St Edward Anglican church. Burial followed at Oliver cemetery with pallbearers named.

Goose Lake Budget Set At 70 000 For 1952

Goose Lake Consolidated School District annual ratepayers meeting held January 15 in the Collegiate auditorium elected Dr. J. Carlyle Parker as chairman with Mrs. M. Beaven as secretary. Treasurer Wm. Scott reported receipts of 60 422.91 and items: salaries 27 997.48 transportation 17 902.75 caretaking 3 360.00 debentures 4 932.64 a cash balance of 4 225.91. The 1952 budget of 70 000 called for salary increases to 33 500 and transportation to 22 000. Cadet training discussed with possible non school hour options. board noted heating system modernization for possible long term savings.

At the first 1952 meeting of Evangeline Rebekah Lodge District Deputy President Margaret Sorbo installed officers including Noble Grand D. Bowley and Secretary I. Rice. District Deputy Sorbo was assisted by Past Noble Grands in pastel gowns. Followed by District Marshal Adams installing Warden A. McFadyen and others. A social hour followed with a luncheon.

Bible Society Thanks Roblin for 1951 Contributions

Wedding Blessing at Tummel United Church

Alice Loretta Howe and Herbert George Henderson wed at Tummel United Church on December 2 with Dr. J Carlyle Parker officiating. The ceremony featured lace satin gown, orange blossom veil, red Talisman roses, and a reception at Tummell Community hall. The couple will reside in Snowflake, Manitoba.
