Manitoba Throne Speech Outlines Twelve Point Plan

The throne speech lists a 12 point program focusing on destruction of a large lime and uranium plant, community development, modern water and waste disposal, food protection, health and welfare, agricultural research, water control, major highway projects, weed control, housing and hospital construction, driver safety expansion, and holding grain rates for Crow's Nest Pass. It notes a year of harvest loss, record road building, high factory output, and substantial farm loans and rural schooling gains.

Square Dancing Event at Reoun Memorial Hall

Leap Year Square Dance set for Saturday January 23 at 7 p.m. in Reoun Memorial Hall. Judge Lawrie Clark of Workich will lead. many dancers from Cur-vl-iono square dance clubs expected. Robin Cup serves a Turkey Supper to all in attendance. A Bed Time will be in the state for everyone.

Rebekah Lodge Installs 1960 Officers in Masonuic Hall

On January 14 Evangeline Kevcaan Lange No. 41 held its first meeting of the year in Masonuic Hall and installed new officers for 1960. District Deputy President Mrs Lillian Sausecock assisted by Alexandra Keovuxih Lodge staff and others presented officers including Grand Mrs M McKayVice Grand Mrs I Stewart Rec Sec Mrs J Mitchell Bin Sec Miss Mildred Asaby Treasurer Mrs M Gamey Warren Mrs E Ferguson Counselor Mrs Irene Elder Chaplain Mrs Eva Jory Musician Mrs Isly Simpson Singer Mrs E Reyda Rigat and various supporters. Each officer received a corsage amid congratulations from Sisters Essie Cross Donis Waters Estella Scott Ina Simpson and others. A social hour followed with visiting sisters from Dauphin.

Signing Contract for Electronic Equipment CKOS-TV and CGE

Ronald L. Skinner CKOS TV general manager and Ken Fowler CGE sales rep sign a contract for electronic equipment to be installed at Manitoba new Baldy Mountain rebroadcasting station. The 500 foot steel tower will support a 30 foot antenna weighing over 3000 lbs. Coverage aims at Dauphin and Swan River areas on Channel 8 CKOS TV 1.

Stand Against Discrimination Moves in Legislature

A Manitoba legislature session opens with a bill on Fair Accommodation Practices to ban discrimination in lodging and services by race color or religion. Supporters urge penalties for establishments that practice discrimination, noting similar Ontario legislation and a 1959 backbench endorsement. Continued on Page 4 Column 4.

Roblin Village Council appoints committees and officers

The Roblin village council met January 5 1960 with Mayor Newton presiding. They adopted the December 8 1959 minutes, set monthly meetings for the second Tuesday, and appointed R P Jakeman as secretary treasurer at 3800 dollars for 1960. Health Officer Dr Kerwan receives 25 dollars, and solicitor Rupert Carr is named with a 25 dollar annual fee. Committees were formed and Art Currey named town engineer at 3200 dollars increasing to 3500. Deputy Mayor Wm Ford given signing authority. Various accounts and 1959 payables listed for payment, with welfare recoveries noted from the province.

Cromarty 4H Club Holds Second Meeting

The Cromarty 4H Club held its second meeting January 11 at the Cromarty Community Hall with forty two members. Leaders listed cover Garden Beef Tractor Sewing clubs and special speakers were announced for February 4 at 8 pm with Miss Louis Bathe and Mr Robert Rae as presenters.

Lutheran Ladies Aid Meeting Held Jan 7

The Lutheran Ladies Aid of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church met at the parsonage on January 7 with nine members and four visitors. The treasurer reported a balance of 415.35 dollars and plans included a 5 dollar donation to the Assiniboiine Bulletin and 5 dollars for Lutheran Welfare Association renewal. The Women’s Missionary League will be organized January 20 and handiwork from Hong Kong was displayed for sale. Lunch followed.

Tummel W A Met At Mrs Fisher Home

The Tummel W A met at the home of Mrs. O C Fisher on January 13 with nine members and one visitor. The program for the year was set, welfare and manse committees appointed, a bake sale planned for February with Group 3 in charge, and the February meeting announced for February 10 at Mrs. G Jory's home.

The Roblin Branch of the U C W L held its December meeting at the Catholic Parish Hall with Rev Father Ivanochko presiding. Officers for 1960 were chosen: President Mrs W Lupichuk Vice President Mrs J Hersak Secretary Mrs R Kozak Treasurer Mrs R Perchaluk Corresponding Secretary Mrs P Peteleski. The 1959 report showed a cash surplus and much of the proceeds donated to interior work at the parish hall. Lunch followed.

Dennis Johnston of Saskatoon spent weeks visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ray Switzer. Jona Switzer, working in Saskatoon, spent the past month with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Switzer.

St. Viad's Hockey Edges In Lively Winnipegosis Shootout

St. Vlad's College fell behind early as Winnipegosis opened with four goals in the first period and built a 5-2 lead. St. Vlad's rallied with two goals late in the second and multiple tallies in the third, but Winnipegosis held on for a 10-7 win despite a late Saints surge and a standout performance from Roman Winnicki.

Roblin Intermediates fall to St Vlad's in wild 10-7 defeat

Roblin Intermediates, after a 5-1 first period lead, capitulated in the third as St Vlad's College staged a seven goal surge to win 10-7 at Roblin Arena. Harry Ollynek sparked the Saints with four goals and an assist. Roblin opened strong with goals by Tom Bowley and Billy Pitze.

College Triumphs Over Swan River

St. Vlad's defeated Swan River 14 to 10 in an exhibition game at Swan River on January 16. Dave Andreychuk and Roman Winnicki led with four goals each for the winners, while Swan River struggled early before MacMillan and others responded in the second period.
