The Intermountain School Division board met January 4 1971 at Grandview to elect officers and set 1971 committees including finance building negotiations public relations staff and transportation. Stan Plewak named secretary treasurer and O Ziolkowski superintendent. Meetings to be open to the public with January 18 gathering in Roblin.

The province named three ex extension home economists to posts in Swan River Morden and Carman. Glenda Butcher will develop extension home economics programs in Swan River. Linda Meggison will serve in Morden and Barbara Metcalfe transfers to Carman.

Collegiate Capers at Gilbert Plains Jan 7 basketball results

Roblin Jr. Boys lost to Gilbert Plains 50 34 in league play. Roblin Senior Girls defeated Gilbert Plains 29 10 with strong passing and shooting. Senior Boys beat Gilbert Plains Trojans 48 42 in an exciting game. Intramural basketball and ping pong underway. RC I students thank buyers of chocolate bars for a successful campaign.

Dauphin Rink Wins District 11 Playoffs In Curling

Eight rinks from Dauphin Grandview Gilbert Plains Renville Swan River and Roblin competed in a double knockout spiel at Roblin to decide District 11 qualifiers for Manitoba Ladies Curling Association. Dauphin’s Connie Fennell rink defeated Roblin’s Liz Bruce rink on the final end to clinch advancement to Flin Flon.

Grant Halkewich Foursome Tops Local 4-H Bonspiel

Thirty eight rinks from Roblin Ag. Rep. area competed in the 4 H Scramble Bonspiel at Roblin Curling Rink on December 28 and 29 with two final games played on Wednesday. Grant Halkewich led the First Event to 1st place as Vern Doole's rink took 2nd, Reg Radford 3rd, and Marvin Cockerill 4th. the Second Event was won by Randy Hawryluk with 2nd Randy Baumung, 3rd Murray Syko, and 4th Murray Diehl. Parents and friends followed the play closely.

Local weddings and Holiday visits noted around Brandon area

Mr and Mrs Ken Jones attended the wedding of Bob Fitchner and Bev Whitford at Brandon on January 4. The Fitchners and Brenda with Mrs Erna Jones then left for Cranbrook BC after the ceremony. Bob and Bev will reside in Amarillo Texas where Bob plays in the Central Hockey League. Visitors over New Year to Mr and Mrs Herb Maudsley included many relatives from Manitoba Saskatchewan and BC. Also noted were travels to Edmonton for Christmas and the Sorochuk family wedding at the Bonaventure Hotel with brothers Mike and Fred Sorochuk as best men.

On Tuesday January 6, forty three cadets paraded. St Lazare recruits Marc Mullaire joins as a future squadron recruit. Officers present included C.0 Adjutant Chief Instructor and Supply Officer Mr Maurer now an Officer Cadet in the Reserve Forces. Instructors D Trinder Arnold Marshall and Constable Bacon led courses on Early Canadian Aviation Principles of Flight First Aid Citizenship and drill.

Mr and Mrs Whitney McIntyre of Roblin celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary and Mr McIntyre s 88th birthday with a home reception on December 28 1970. Relatives and friends attended from Roblin Preeceville and Brandon with gifts and greetings while social time tea and cake were shared. The couple long time district residents farmed north of Roblin before retiring to Roblin and remain active church members though Mr McIntyre has had health issues in recent years.

Roblin arena progress and hockey admission news

The Roblin North Star hockey association and minor clubs are building the new arena with voluntary labor to finish the ice and flood the surface. Electrical supplies are awaited this week. roof work will pause until April. Rates for arena rental are set at 60 40 percent split with 75 cents for adults, 50 cents for students, and 25 cents for children 6 to 12. Season tickets will not be honored.

Primary School thanks volunteers and thank yous

The Primary School lauds volunteers especially mothers for noon hour supervision aiding five and six year olds with lunches and dressing. Four teachers supervise all children while mothers help. A public thanks goes to Mr Sheldon Jones for lending Indian artifacts and sharing knowledge of their use and manufacture.

Solinski Wins at Roblin Legion New Years Dance

About 350 people attended the Legion New Years Dance in Roblin. Ray Solinski won the dressed hog in the raffle. Proceeds from the dance and ticket sales go to the Community Rink Committee for local rink support.
